Del Harris is a former American professional basketball player and coach who is best known for his successful coaching career in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Harris was born on June 18, 1937, in Plainfield, Indiana. He played college basketball at Milligan College and later at the University of Houston.

Harris played professional basketball for the Houston Mavericks of the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1967-1968. He then began his coaching career in the ABA, serving as an assistant coach for the Dallas Chaparrals before becoming a head coach for the Utah Stars in 1974.

Harris then moved on to the NBA, where he served as an assistant coach for the Houston Rockets, Milwaukee Bucks, and Los Angeles Lakers before becoming a head coach for the Houston Rockets in 1983. Harris had great success with the Rockets, leading them to the NBA Finals in 1986. He then coached the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers, where he coached the team to the NBA Finals in 1991.

Harris was also the head coach of the Chinese men's national basketball team from 2004 to 2008, where he led them to their first-ever Olympic appearance in 2008.
