Dion Phaneuf is a former professional ice hockey player from Canada who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for 14 seasons. He was born on April 10, 1985, in Edmonton, Alberta, and began his hockey career in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Red Deer Rebels.
Phaneuf was drafted ninth overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and made his NHL debut in 2005. He quickly established himself as a physical defenseman with a powerful shot and was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team in his first season.
In 2007, Phaneuf signed a six-year contract extension with the Flames and was named an alternate captain. He continued to be a key player for the team, earning a spot in the NHL All-Star Game in 2007 and 2008.
In 2010, Phaneuf was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he was named team captain in 2010-2011. He played for the Leafs for seven seasons, becoming one of the team's top defensemen and leading them to the playoffs in 2013.
In 2016, Phaneuf was traded to the Ottawa Senators, where he played for two and a half seasons before being traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 2018. He finished his NHL career with the Kings in 2019.
Throughout his career, Phaneuf was known for his physical play and his ability to contribute offensively. He scored 137 goals and 357 assists in 1,048 career NHL games, and was named to the NHL All-Star Game twice.
