Stephenson began his football career at the University of Alabama, where he was a standout center. He was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 1980 NFL Draft and went on to have a successful career with the team. He was a key part of the Dolphins' offensive line, anchoring the middle of the line and providing strong leadership.
Stephenson was known for his quickness and agility, as well as his intelligence and ability to read the defense. He was a master of the shotgun snap and was able to make the necessary adjustments to the blocking schemes to give the Dolphins a strong running game.
