George Yardley was a professional basketball player who had a successful career in the 1950s and 1960s. He was born in Oakland, California in 1928 and attended Stanford University, where he was an All-American in basketball and track. After college, he was drafted by the Fort Wayne Pistons in the 1950 NBA Draft.

Yardley was an immediate success in the NBA, leading the league in scoring in his rookie season with a then-record 1,192 points. He was also named to the All-NBA First Team and was selected to the All-Star Game. He continued to be a dominant force in the NBA, leading the league in scoring again in the 1954-55 season and making the All-Star team in each of his first five seasons.

In 1957, Yardley was traded to the Detroit Pistons and continued to be a productive player. He was selected to the All-Star team in each of his three seasons with the Pistons and was named to the All-NBA Second Team in 1959. He retired after the 1959-60 season, having scored 11,231 points in his career, which was the sixth-highest total in NBA history at the time.

Yardley was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996 and was named one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players in 1996. He was also inducted into the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982 and the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1989. He passed away in 2004 at the age of 76.

George Yardley was a dominant force in the NBA during his career, leading the league in scoring twice and being selected to the All-Star team in each of his first five seasons.
