James Donaldson is a retired American professional basketball player who had a successful career in the NBA. He was born in San Diego, California and attended Washington State University, where he was a two-time All-Pac-10 selection.

Donaldson was drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in the second round of the 1981 NBA Draft. He played for the SuperSonics for four seasons, averaging 8.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. He was then traded to the Dallas Mavericks, where he played for three seasons and averaged 10.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.

Donaldson was then traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, where he played for two seasons and averaged 8.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. He then signed with the New York Knicks, where he played for two seasons and averaged 8.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.

Donaldson then signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he played for two seasons and averaged 8.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. He then signed with the Portland Trail Blazers, where he played for two seasons and averaged 7.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
