Jean Gauthier was a Canadian ice hockey player who had a successful career as a defenseman. He played for several teams in the National Hockey League (NHL) and the World Hockey Association (WHA) during the 1960s and 1970s.

Gauthier began his professional career with the Montreal Canadiens in the early 1960s. He played for the team for several seasons, helping them win the Stanley Cup in 1965. He was known for his strong defensive skills and his ability to shut down opposing players.

In 1967, Gauthier was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. He played for the team for two seasons before being traded again, this time to the Los Angeles Kings. He played for the Kings for several seasons, serving as team captain for a time.

In 1972, Gauthier joined the newly-formed WHA, signing with the Quebec Nordiques. He played for the team for several seasons, helping them win the Avco Cup in 1977. He was known for his physical play and his ability to contribute offensively as well as defensively.

Gauthier retired from professional hockey in 1979. He finished his career with 34 goals and 142 assists in 696 NHL games, and 47 goals and 139 assists in 424 WHA games. He was known as a tough, hard-working player who always gave his best effort on the ice.
