Ireland's career in football began long before his time with the Dolphins. He was born into a football family; his grandfather, Jim Parmer, was a former NFL player and scout. Ireland played college football at Baylor University and the University of North Texas. However, his time with the Dolphins was also marked by controversy, including a highly publicized incident in which he asked inappropriate questions to a draft prospect during an interview.
Despite the controversies, Ireland helped to build a competitive team in Miami. Under his leadership, the Dolphins had a winning season in 2008 and made it to the playoffs. However, the team struggled to maintain consistency in the following years, leading to Ireland's departure from the Dolphins in 2013.
After leaving the Dolphins, Ireland joined the New Orleans Saints as a college scout in 2014. He was promoted to Assistant General Manager in 2015, a position he still holds.
