Jerry Gross, a renowned sportscaster, passed away at age 81 after a long battle with cancer. Known for his dynamic and engaging commentary, Gross was the first voice of the NBA team in San Diego, capturing the excitement and rhythm of the game. His broadcasting career spanned several major sports and teams in San Diego, including the Padres, Chargers, San Diego State, and the University of San Diego.

Gross's career in broadcasting began in St. Louis, where he was the play-by-play announcer for the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Hawks. In 1967, he was lured to San Diego by the expansion team, the Rockets, where he became a significant figure in the city's sportscasting scene. His exceptional skills were recognized by peers, with Lakers broadcasting superstar Chick Hearn once describing him as "the finest play-by-play basketball announcer I’ve ever heard in my life."

In 1969, Gross was part of the broadcasting team for the debut of the Padres, San Diego's major league baseball team. He later worked with the Indiana Pacers and ESPN's college football broadcasts. Despite his social nature, Gross was deeply dedicated to his work and family, often putting the needs of his wife, Gretchen, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, before his own. He is survived by his wife, daughter, son, and three grandchildren. His legacy as a pioneering sports broadcaster and an inspiring figure in San Diego's sports history will be long remembered.
