Tarkanian began his coaching career at Riverside City College in 1968. He then moved on to Long Beach State in 1973, where he led the team to four NCAA tournament appearances. He then moved on to UNLV in 1973, where he had his most successful coaching stint. During his 19 years at UNLV, he led the team to four Final Fours and one National Championship in 1990. He was also named National Coach of the Year in 1983.
