Jonathan Babineaux is a former American football defensive tackle who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 12 seasons. He was born on October 12, 1981, in Port Arthur, Texas, and attended the University of Iowa, where he played college football for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Babineaux was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He quickly established himself as a key player on the Falcons' defense, starting in 13 games in his rookie season and recording 3.5 sacks. Over the course of his career, Babineaux played in 185 games for the Falcons, starting in 133 of them. He was known for his versatility and ability to play multiple positions on the defensive line, as well as his leadership and work ethic.
One of Babineaux's most memorable moments came in the 2012 NFC Divisional Playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks. With the Falcons leading 27-21 and the Seahawks driving for a potential game-winning touchdown, Babineaux made a crucial tackle on running back Marshawn Lynch, stopping him just short of the goal line and preserving the Falcons' victory.
Babineaux was a consistent performer throughout his career, recording 27.5 sacks, 347 tackles, and 19 passes defensed. He was also a durable player, missing only 10 games due to injury over his 12-year career. In addition to his on-field accomplishments, Babineaux was known for his community involvement and was a two-time nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.
After the 2016 season, Babineaux became a free agent and was not signed by any team. He officially announced his retirement from the NFL in March 2018. Since retiring, Babineaux has remained involved in football, working as a high school football coach and serving as a color commentator for Falcons games on local radio. He has also continued his community involvement, including working with the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
