Jonathan Vilma is a former American football linebacker who played in the National Football League (NFL) for nine seasons. He was born on April 16, 1982, in Coral Gables, Florida, and attended the University of Miami, where he played college football for the Miami Hurricanes.

Vilma was selected by the New York Jets in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft, and he quickly established himself as one of the league's top linebackers. He played for the Jets for four seasons, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2005 and being named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2004.

In 2008, Vilma was traded to the New Orleans Saints, where he continued to excel. He was a key member of the Saints' defense during their Super Bowl-winning season in 2009, and he was named to the Pro Bowl that year as well. Vilma played for the Saints for five seasons, and he was a team captain and leader both on and off the field.

Throughout his career, Vilma was known for his intelligence, athleticism, and versatility. He was equally adept at stopping the run and dropping back into coverage, and he was a skilled tackler and pass rusher. He was also a respected leader in the locker room, and he was known for his work ethic and dedication to the game.

Unfortunately, Vilma's career was marred by controversy in his later years. In 2012, he was suspended for the entire season by the NFL for his role in the "Bountygate" scandal, in which the Saints were accused of paying players bonuses for injuring opponents. Vilma denied the allegations and fought the suspension, but he ultimately served the full year-long ban.

Vilma returned to the field in 2013, but he played in only one game before suffering a knee injury that ended his season. He was released by the Saints in the offseason, and he announced his retirement from the NFL in 2014.

Despite the controversy surrounding his career, Vilma is widely regarded as one of the best linebackers of his era. He finished his career with 874 tackles, 12 sacks, 11 interceptions, and 10 forced fumbles, and he was a three-time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro. He was also a respected leader and teammate, and he left a lasting impact on the teams he played for.
