Leonard Marshall

Biography

Leonard Marshall is a former American football defensive end who played for several teams during his career in the National Football League (NFL). He was born on October 22, 1961, in Franklin, Louisiana, and attended Louisiana State University (LSU) where he played college football.

Marshall was selected by the New York Giants in the second round of the 1983 NFL Draft and played for the team for nine seasons. He was a key member of the Giants' defense during their Super Bowl victories in 1987 and 1991. Marshall was known for his pass-rushing abilities and was named to the Pro Bowl twice during his time with the Giants.

After leaving the Giants, Marshall played for the New York Jets and the Washington Redskins before retiring from the NFL in 1995. He finished his career with 83.5 sacks, 12 fumble recoveries, and 2 interceptions.

Marshall was known for his physical style of play and was involved in several notable plays during his career. One of his most famous moments came in the 1990 NFC Championship Game when he sacked San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana, causing him to fumble the ball and leading to a Giants touchdown.

In addition to his success on the field, Marshall was also known for his charitable work off the field. He founded the Leonard Marshall Foundation, which focuses on raising awareness and funds for research into traumatic brain injuries and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in athletes.

Marshall's football career was not without controversy, however. In 2013, he filed a lawsuit against the NFL, alleging that the league had concealed information about the long-term effects of concussions and head injuries from players. The lawsuit was settled in 2015 for $765 million, but Marshall has continued to be an advocate for player safety and concussion awareness.

Overall, Leonard Marshall was a dominant force on the football field during his career in the NFL. He was a key member of two Super Bowl-winning teams and was known for his physical style of play. Off the field, he has been a vocal advocate for player safety and concussion awareness, and his charitable work has helped to raise awareness and funds for research into traumatic brain injuries.
