Lionel Washington is a former American football player who played as a cornerback in the National Football League (NFL) for 15 seasons. He was born on February 26, 1963, in Houston, Texas, and attended Lamar High School in Houston before going on to play college football at Tulane University.
Washington was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the fourth round of the 1983 NFL Draft and played for the team for six seasons before they moved to Arizona and became the Cardinals. He then played for the Cardinals for another six seasons before finishing his career with the Oakland Raiders and the Denver Broncos.
Throughout his career, Washington was known for his speed and agility on the field, as well as his ability to read and anticipate plays. He was also known for his durability, having played in 223 games over the course of his career.
Washington was a two-time Pro Bowl selection, earning the honor in 1988 and 1990. He was also named to the All-Pro team in 1990. In addition, he was a member of the Cardinals' 1988 NFC Championship team.
After retiring from football, Washington went on to become a coach. He served as a defensive backs coach for the Arizona Cardinals from 2000 to 2002 and for the Oakland Raiders from 2003 to 2004. He then served as the defensive coordinator for the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League in 2011.
