At Washington State, Harshman had great success, leading the Cougars to four NCAA tournament appearances and two Pac-10 titles. He was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 1965 and was inducted into the Pac-10 Hall of Fame in 1988. In 1972, he left Washington State to become the head coach at the University of Washington, where he led the Huskies to four NCAA tournament appearances and one Pac-10 title. He was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 1977 and was inducted into the Pac-10 Hall of Fame in 1989.
Harshman retired from coaching in 1985 and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002. During his career, he compiled a record of 642-381 and was known for his emphasis on fundamentals and his ability to get the most out of his players. He was also known for his integrity and his commitment to education, as he was a strong advocate for student-athletes and their academic success.
