Niklas Backstrom is a retired Finnish ice hockey goaltender who played professionally in the National Hockey League (NHL) for over a decade. He began his career in his native Finland, playing for Karpat in the Finnish Elite League before being signed by the Minnesota Wild in 2006.

Backstrom quickly established himself as a top goaltender in the NHL, earning a spot on the NHL All-Rookie Team in his first season. He continued to excel in subsequent seasons, earning a spot in the NHL All-Star Game in 2009 and being named a finalist for the Vezina Trophy as the league's top goaltender in 2009 and 2010.

Throughout his career, Backstrom was known for his calm and composed style in net, as well as his ability to make difficult saves look routine. He was also a strong team player, known for his leadership and work ethic both on and off the ice.

In addition to his success in the NHL, Backstrom also represented Finland in international competition, including the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. He helped lead Finland to a bronze medal in that tournament, and also won a silver medal at the 2006 IIHF World Championships.

Backstrom's career was not without its challenges, however. He battled injuries throughout his time in the NHL, including a sports hernia that required surgery in 2014. He also faced stiff competition for playing time from other goaltenders, including Darcy Kuemper and Devan Dubnyk.

After spending his entire NHL career with the Minnesota Wild, Backstrom was traded to the Calgary Flames in 2016. He played just one game for the Flames before being sent down to the American Hockey League (AHL), and ultimately retired from professional hockey at the end of the season.

Despite the challenges he faced, Backstrom's career was a successful one, marked by numerous accolades and a reputation as one of the top goaltenders of his era. He remains a beloved figure among Minnesota Wild fans, and is remembered as a consummate professional and a true team player.
