Norman Mac Lean was a highly respected and accomplished lawyer who made significant contributions to the legal profession throughout his career. He was born in Canada and attended the University of Toronto, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1959. He then went on to study law at the University of Western Ontario, where he received his LLB in 1962.

After completing his education, Mac Lean began his legal career as an associate at the Toronto law firm of McCarthy Tétrault. He quickly established himself as a talented and dedicated lawyer, and was promoted to partner in 1970. During his time at McCarthy Tétrault, Mac Lean worked on a wide range of complex legal matters, including corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, and securities law.

In 1973, Mac Lean left McCarthy Tétrault to join the law firm of Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt. He continued to focus on corporate finance and securities law, and quickly became one of the firm's most respected and sought-after lawyers. Over the course of his career at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt, Mac Lean worked on many high-profile transactions, including the privatization of Petro-Canada and the merger of Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railways.

In addition to his work as a lawyer, Mac Lean was also deeply committed to the legal profession as a whole. He served as a member of the Ontario Securities Commission from 1987 to 1992, and was a member of the Canadian Bar Association's Securities Law Section Executive from 1988 to 1990. He was also a frequent speaker and lecturer on legal topics, and was widely regarded as an expert in his field.

Mac Lean retired from Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt in 2008, after more than 35 years with the firm. Throughout his career, he was known for his exceptional legal skills, his unwavering commitment to his clients, and his dedication to the legal profession. He was widely respected and admired by his colleagues and peers, and his contributions to the legal profession will be remembered for many years to come.
