Chernomaz played for the Flames' minor league team, the Salt Lake Golden Eagles, for one season before being traded to the Detroit Red Wings in 1987. He played for the Red Wings' minor league team, the Adirondack Red Wings, for two seasons before being traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 1989.

Chernomaz played for the Kings' minor league team, the New Haven Nighthawks, for one season before leaving North America to play in Europe. He played for several teams in Europe, including EV Landshut in Germany, HC Bolzano in Italy, and HC Davos in Switzerland.
