Ruslan Salei was a professional ice hockey player from Belarus who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for over a decade. He was known for his physical play and defensive skills, and was a respected leader on and off the ice.

Salei began his professional career in his home country of Belarus, playing for the Dinamo Minsk team in the Russian Superleague. He quickly established himself as a top defenseman, and was selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the first round of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.

Salei made his NHL debut with the Ducks in the 1996-97 season, and quickly became a fan favorite for his hard-hitting style of play. He spent nine seasons with the Ducks, helping the team reach the Stanley Cup Finals in 2003. Salei was a key part of the Ducks' defense during his time with the team, and was known for his ability to shut down opposing forwards.

In 2006, Salei was traded to the Florida Panthers, where he played for two seasons before being traded again to the Colorado Avalanche. He spent two seasons with the Avalanche before signing with the Detroit Red Wings in 2010.

Salei's time with the Red Wings was cut short, however, when he was tragically killed in a plane crash in 2011. He was traveling with the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team to their first game of the season when the plane crashed, killing all 44 people on board.

Salei was remembered by his teammates and fans as a fierce competitor on the ice and a kind and generous person off the ice. He was a beloved member of the hockey community, and his loss was felt deeply by all who knew him.

In total, Salei played in 917 NHL games over the course of his career, scoring 45 goals and 149 assists. He was a two-time Olympian for Belarus, and also represented his country in numerous other international tournaments. Despite his success on the ice, Salei will always be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and leadership both on and off the ice.
