Sami Salo is a retired Finnish professional ice hockey player who played as a defenseman. He began his professional career in 1994 with TPS Turku in the Finnish Elite League. He played for TPS Turku for four seasons before moving to Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1998.

Salo played for the Senators for two seasons before being traded to the Vancouver Canucks in 2002. He played for the Canucks for ten seasons and was known for his strong defensive play and powerful slapshot. Salo was also a key player on the Canucks' power play unit.

During his time with the Canucks, Salo helped the team reach the Stanley Cup Finals in 2011, where they lost to the Boston Bruins in seven games. He was also a member of the Finnish national team and won a silver medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.

Injuries were a constant issue for Salo throughout his career. He suffered from various injuries, including a ruptured Achilles tendon, a broken wrist, and a concussion. Despite these setbacks, Salo continued to play at a high level and was respected by his teammates and opponents alike.

Salo retired from professional hockey in 2015 after playing one season with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He finished his NHL career with 99 goals and 240 assists in 878 games. Salo was known for his strong defensive play, powerful slapshot, and leadership on and off the ice. He was a respected player in the NHL and will be remembered as one of the best Finnish defensemen of his generation.
