He was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft, selected in the third round as the 37th overall pick.

Rowe's NHL playing career spanned several seasons, during which he played as a right winger. He spent time with the Washington Capitals, Hartford Whalers, and Detroit Red Wings. Known for his size and physical play, Rowe was able to contribute both offensively and defensively. His best season came in 1978-79 with the Capitals, where he scored 31 goals and added 30 assists, totaling 61 points in 69 games. This performance made him the first American-born player to score 30 goals in an NHL season, a notable achievement at the time.

In 2016, Rowe took on the role of head coach for the Florida Panthers, stepping in mid-season.
