- - - A new backup quarterback is coming to the Chicago Bears. Could the current one now be on his way out? - Former New Orleans Saints quarterback Trevor Siemian is signing with the Bears, according to his agent Mike McCartney. The deal is reportedly for two years. - Siemian, who played college football locally at Northwestern, returns to the area to presumably back up Justin Fields. He was drafted in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL draft by the Denver Broncos and following the team’s Super Bowl victory and retirement of Peyton Manning, became the starter for the majority of the next two seasons. He threw for 5,680 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions during his time with the Broncos before bouncing around the league as a backup. - - Excited for @TrevorSiemian agreeing to a 2 year deal with the @ChicagoBears - — Mike McCartney (@MikeMcCartney7) March 25, 2022 - - - - Free-agent QB Trevor Siemian reached agreement on a two-year deal with the Chicago Bears, per his agent @MikeMcCartney7. - — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 25, 2022 - - - After seeing little-to-no playing time with the Minnesota Vikings in 2018 and the New York Jets in 2019, Siemian saw extended time with the New Orleans Saints this past season. He went 0-4 as a starter while filling in due to injuries, though he did throw 11 touchdowns and just three interceptions with a quarterback rating of 88.4, the best of his career. - Siemian becomes the fourth quarterback on the roster, joining Fields, veteran Nick Foles, and Ryan Willis. The Bears could theoretically bring all four quarterbacks to training camp later this summer, but perhaps they’re ready to move on from Foles. The former Super Bowl MVP is entering the final year of his deal after arriving to the Bears in a trade in 2020. He already earned a $4 million roster bonus and is set to cost over $10 million against the cap. A trade would free up $8 million in cap space, however, while costing just $2.67 million in dead money. - The Bears and general manager Ryan Poles ideally would like to have more picks to use in this year’s NFL Draft. A Foles trade might net a late-round selection from a team looking to bolster their quarterback position. Either way, Siemian looks to have the inside track as the primary backup. - - List - - Biggest 2022 salary cap hits for Bears following first wave of free agency - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Bears Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Bears Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
