The first time wide receiver Allen Robinson hit the market in free agency, the Indianapolis Colts showed some interest. Almost four years later, he’s on the market again. - Now as a 28-year-old, Robinson is likely to hit free agency after his four-year stint with the Chicago Bears. Though the 2021 campaign was a down year for him, the Colts have a need at wide receiver. - In looking at the best fits for their top-50 ranked free agents, the Colts were listed as the ideal landing spot for Robinson by ESPN. - Why it makes sense: We love the fit as a do-it-all receiver option opposite Michael Pittman Jr. But the Colts rarely spend big. Is Robinson attainable coming off a down year statistically? Maybe that’s when Indy pounces. — Fowler - Scheme fit: Robinson is a smooth route runner with the physical traits to make contested catches. And opposite of Pittman in Indianapolis, the veteran wide receiver can be deployed as a vertical target in the slot and on play-action in-breakers. — Bowen - The Colts didn’t get much out of their receivers sans Michael Pittman Jr. in 2021. Outside of him, not one player reached 385 receiving yards. Some of that is on quarterback Carson Wentz and his inability to consistently maximize run-after-catch opportunities. - But mostly, the Colts need new talent in the room. They can’t continue to get by with Zach Pascal and Parris Campbell at the top of the depth chart. - Robinson is coming off of the worst season of his career, which is why the Colts might be into him. He’s likely to come at a discount even though that doesn’t really matter to Chris Ballard considering he’s not one to splurge in free agency just to fill a need. - Even with Robinson coming off that down year, it might be wise for the Colts to add some “new” faces to the room, especially if they are going to run it back with Wentz. - - Like Colts Wire on Facebook - Follow Colts Wire on Twitter - Follow Kevin on Twitter (@KevinHickey11) - - Related2022 NFL draft order: All 32 1st-round picks set after Super Bowl LVIJeff Saturday on Carson Wentz: 'I think he's done in Indy'Report: Colts finalize hiring of Richard Smith - - List - - 6 potential trade destinations for Colts QB Carson Wentz - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Colts Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Colts Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
