Giants spoke with Maryland TE Chigoziem Okonkwo / The New York Giants will undoubtedly look into adding to their tight end room in the 2022 NFL draft, and this class is full of capable players at the position. - One player the Giants have shown interest in is Maryland’s Chigoziem Okonkwo, who ran the fasted 40 time (4.52) among the tight end group at this year’s NFL Combine. - The Giants were among many teams on hand at Maryland’s pro day this week. - - Maryland TE Chigoziem Okonkwo said he has had in depth conversations with the Ravens, Giants, Titans, Saints, Browns and others. He said it would be cool to play with QB Lamar Jackson. - “You don't really get to see that many extraordinary talents like that.” pic.twitter.com/EL64kYD1VQ - — Ryan McFadden (@ryanmcfadden_) March 30, 2022 - - - The 6-foot-2, 238-pound Okonkwo may be a tad small to be a prototype NFL tight end, but that could be overlooked by teams who could use a versatile athlete at the position. - “I’ve been doing this since I was 7,” Okonkwo said, via the Baltimore Sun. “It’s been my No. 1 goal my entire life. . .I can play every role. I can play out wide, the slot, the backfield. I can cause mismatches, and I can block.” - The latter part remains to be seen at the pro level. Okonkwo is basically the same size as Evan Engram, and we all know how that worked out. But Engram was a first round pick. Okonkwo will likely be a Day 3 section. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.

2022 NFL draft: Giants have meeting scheduled with Evan Neal / - - - The New York Giants
2022 NFL draft: Giants have meeting scheduled with Evan Neal / - - - The New York Giants will be adding to their offensive line in the 2022 NFL draft, say head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. - They hold the firth and seventh overall selections in the draft and will likely use one of those picks to fulfill their need at right tackle. - One candidate that they would be thrilled to get is Alabama’s Evan Neal, considered the top tackle in this year’s class. That is, if he get through the first four selections held by Jacksonville, Detroit, Houston and the Jets, respectively. - Neal will be meeting with the Giants this spring, and ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. is mocking Neal to the Giants at No. 5. - The Giants, naturally, were on hand this week at Neal’s pro day where the 6-foot-7, 350-pounder (that’s an estimate) participated. His head coach, Nick Sabin, extolled Neal’s virtues. - “He loves football,” Saban said of Neal. “He pays attention to detail; he prepares well; and, you know, his size and athletic ability has put him in a position where I think he has a very bright future. He’s done a great job for us whether he played guard or tackle, and I’m sure that diversity will help him as a pro player as well.” - “You can pretty much plug me in anywhere other than center and I’ll be able to come in and make an impact,” Neal said. - And the Giants could sure use an impact player, especially along the offensive line.

Tiki Barber makes case for Giants to move on from Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley / - - - Everyone is playing general manager these days as the 2022 NFL draft approaches. Talk radio hosts all have their strong opinions and attempt to impart them on their listeners. - One talk radio host, however, might have a little bit more mojo than the normal squaring head and that is WFAN’s Tiki Barber — the same same Tiki Barber who holds the New York Giants’ all-timer using and total yards records. - Barber believes the Giants, who are in full rebuild mode, should make it a clean break all around and part way with star running back Saquon Barkley and quarterback Daniel Jones. - “The reason I think they should try to trade Saquon is because if you’re going to zero to get your cap in order, just do it,” Tiki said on Wednesday. “Don’t try to mitigate the pain by keeping a popular player here. If you’re resetting, it’s a new regime, new philosophy. . . go all in. If you’re doing this and it’s gonna be painful, you’ve got to just go all in.” - Barber is probably right. - Barkley, after a Pro Bowl debut as a rookie in 2018, has done nothing but get hurt. He may never regain his 2018 form and his $7.2 million salary is weighing the Giants’ down. They are not actively shopping Barkley but will trade him if they get the right offer, but thus far that offer has not come. - When it come to Jones, the Giants have already committed to him for this season. We’ll see how deep that commitment is soon when Jones’ fifth-year option is due. - Barber believes Jones is not the guy the Giants should be rebuilding around. He’s been too inconsistent and even if they surround him with the right pieces, he still may not be talented enough to become the player they need him to be. - “If he’s not gonna be a top-10 quarterback, then why are you worried about figuring him out and trying to get a little bit above average quarterback? He’s never gonna be a top 10, maybe he’s 15, do you trust him to be like Eli [Manning] was? You trusted Eli because even if he was average, because if you got in a critical situation, he was showing up. You could count on that from Eli. Can you count on that from Daniel Jones?” - Good points all around. Stay tuned. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to

Jalen Ramsey says 2020 fight with then-Giants WR Golden Tate was inevitable / - - - Former New York Giants wide receiver Golden Tate is no stranger to controversy. Even before entering the NFL, he was known to be a bit of a hothead. - If not for that and some off-the-field issues, Tate likely would have been a first-round draft pick. Instead, he fell to the 60th overall pick in the second round and would spend the first four years of his career as a Seattle Seahawk. - After Seattle, Tate spent four years in Detroit and one in Philadelphia before landing in New York. - Even before the October 4, 2020 altercation with Los Angeles Rams defender Jalen Ramsey, Tate had his issues in New York. He missed the first four games of the 2019 season, his first with the Giants, under suspension after violating the NFL’s drug policy. Then in 2020, he was in an altercation with Ramsey in the middle of the field after the game ended. - - There’s a fight on the field after the game clock hits zero, press box consensus says it was Jalen Ramsey and Golden Tate involved pic.twitter.com/m6WhFUMhwf - — Nikki Kay (@NikkiKaySN1) October 4, 2020 - - - The dispute was non-football related as Ramsey had recently broken up with Tate’s sister, Breanna. Tate and Ramsey only tenuously got along in the first place, so the breakup only drove a bigger wedge between them. - Ramsey recently told Pivot Podcast that they both knew what was about to happen. - “We knew what we was gonna do,” Ramsey said. “I mean that’s his sister. That’s what he supposed to do too. But you mind your business, too.” - Ramsey even waited by the Giants’ locker room afterward, but stadium staff and security were able to prevent any further problems. He was fined over $15,000 for the incident, while Tate went unpunished. - The Giants released Tate after the 2020 season. In November of 2021, he signed a deal with the Tennessee Titans, but was released in January 2022. He is currently a free agent.

Giants hit a home run in Mike Tannenbaum's mock draft / - - - Mike Tannenbaum has the New York Giants addressing two vital needs in the 2022 NFL draft with the projected selections of Evan Neal and Kayvon Thibodeaux. - Tannenbaum has the Giants selecting Evan Neal, an offensive tackle from Alabama, with the fifth overall pick. - An offensive tackle pairing of Neal and Andrew Thomas gives quarterback Daniel Jones the protection he needs. Neal gave up just one sack last season, and he has 40 career starts under his belt. I considered NC State’s Ikem Ekwonu here, too, but I just believe there’s more certainty with Neal considering the level of competition he faced at Alabama. Being that dominant against SEC pass-rushers is something. - Neal is currently among the draft’s highest-graded offensive tackles after dominating SEC play as a left tackle. He was a three-year starter for the Crimson Tide where he played guard his freshman year and was then moved to right tackle for the 2020 National Championship season. Neal also gained some experience playing left tackle in his 2021 season where he was an All-American. - Two picks later, the Giants are projected to select a practice adversary for Neal with Kayvon Thibodeaux, a defensive end from Oregon. - The Giants managed just 34 sacks last season and have been looking for a game-changing pass-rusher for several years. No way they can pass on Thibodeaux’s ceiling, which is extremely high despite some concerns about his motor. He has the size, speed and power, and he posted 19 sacks over three seasons at Oregon. I’m pretty happy with the haul here for New York, landing Neal and Thibodeaux to address holes in a massive way. - The 2021 All-American had a stellar college career featuring 19.0 sacks and 35.5 tackles for loss in 30 games. The former No. 1 overall recruit is still somewhat of a raw prospect entering the draft but his natural athleticism, length, and power are things that can not be taught. - Due to his lack of multiple pass rush moves and subpar play recognition ability, Thibodeaux has fallen in most mock drafts. However, a fall to seventh overall still seems unlikely due to his untapped potential. - Nevertheless, if Thibodeaux is on the board with the seventh overall pick it seems like a no-brainer for the Giants to draft him. - Will Giants draft Kayvon Thibodeaux? - Powered By PickUp - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - -

2022 NFL draft: Giants attend Alabama pro day / - - - It should come as no surprise that the New York Giants sent personnel to the University of Alabama’s 2022 pro day. Nick Saban is one of the winningest head coaches in NCAA history and is known to turn out solid NFL stock each year. - Given the Giants’ need to fill so many gaps, it’s not hard to see why they were there. - The Alabama players on display Wednesday were as follows: EDGE Christopher Allen, CB Jaylen Armour-Davis, WR Slade Bolden, LB Christian Harris, CB Josh Jobe, DL Phidarian Mathis, OT Evan Neal, OL Chris Owens, DT LaBryan Ray, RB Brian Robinson and DB Daniel Wright. - In addition to the Giants, the Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets and at least 15 other teams were in attendance. The Giants were represented by director of college scouting, Chris Pettit. - - So far here are the NFL teams in attendance at Alabama’s 2022 Pro Day: - -Jaguars-Jets-Lions-Steelers-Cowboys-Dolphins-Cardinals-Broncos-Bengals-Seahawks-49ers-Texans-Rams-Patriots-Saints-Vikings-Chiefs-Giants - — Pat Dowd (@Pat_Dowd77) March 30, 2022 - - - - #Giants Director of College Scouting Chris Pettit talking to Evan Neal prior to #Alabama Pro Day #TogetherBlue pic.twitter.com/NmO1flOcZg - — Giants Today (@NYGToday) March 30, 2022 - - - Saban’s success in developing young players is obvious throughout his career, but certainly during his tenure at Alabama, where he has won six of his seven national titles. - The Giants are undergoing some serious changes this year, and having players who are properly developed and ready to play is important, especially on the defensive side of the ball. And, of course, at right tackle where Evan Neal would be a gem of a pick. - In less than a month, the 2022 NFL draft will commence. Giants' Alex Bachman working out with Baker Mayfield / - - - The Cleveland Browns are in the process of moving on from quarterback Baker Mayfield following the acquisition of fellow quarterback Deshaun Watson. - Where Mayfield ultimately lands remains to be seen but in the interim, he’s staying ready by throwing to several current and former NFL wide receivers. And among them just so happens to be Alex Bachman of the New York Giants. - - From NFL Now on @nflnetwork: Baker Mayfield’s plan is to throw on his own (Cole Beasley, Danny Amendola and Alex Bachman are his current targets) while the #Browns work on a trade. - Meanwhile, Beasley is feeling better after three broken ribs affected his play late last season. pic.twitter.com/WyhPow1Qeb - — Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) March 30, 2022 - - - Bachman, who was signed by the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent out of Wake Forest in 2019, joined the Giants that same year. He was signed to Big Blue’s practice squad roughly a month after L.A. waived him with an injury settlement. - In his three years with the Giants, Bachman has spent time on and off of both the practice squad and active roster. He’s appeared in four games, including three last season, but has yet to draw a target. He has, however, returned four kickoffs for 94 yards and one punt for 16 yards. - Back in January, the Giants signed Bachman to a reserve/futures deal. - Bachman working with Mayfield is of little consequence, but the fact that he’s also working alongside wide receiver Cole Beasley is somewhat interesting. Beasley, a current free agent, has a lengthy history with Giants general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, and could become a potential option for the team somewhere down the line.

Giants' Brian Daboll: Empathizing with players is important / - - - New York Giants first-year head coach Brian Daboll admits he’s got a lot of catching up to do with his new team. He’s the type of guy who is a hands-on manager, especially when it comes to player relationships. - “I probably haven’t hit everybody, to be honest with you,” Daboll told reporters at the NFL owners meetings on Tuesday. “I’ve talked to a few people just to introduce myself. Again, there’s a long time to learn football and things like that and we’ll get to that. Even this first week, one of the things I talked to the coaches about was let’s get to know these players. We haven’t really been around them. Let’s ask them about their families, what they like. It’s important to get to know one another. - “You’re going to be in a competitive situation and you’re going to face a lot of tough times in this league and you can lean on people when you have relationships with them, because you’re building trust because there’s going to be tough times. I’ve said it a million times and I’ve gone through them in my career I’d say quite a bit where I’ve lost or had some really good times. You’re sharing them with the guys that you’re in the building with each day and you’re working hard to achieve a goal and fighting through some things that don’t go your way. I think that’s what brings people closer together.” - Daboll is all about the human side of NFL life. He realizes that he’s dealing with young men who are in unique situations and could use guidance along with the regimentation they receive. - “When things come out, I try to stay on top of it,” Daboll said. “Look, I have kids that are 22 and 21 years old and I’m sure you all have kids that are whatever ages. They’re people first. You can say whatever you want. You can say, ‘Hey, people are just writing stuff or reporting stuff.’ I think it’s important to show a little empathy, too, to the guys in the situations that they’re in. - “I know it’s a tough business, but I think it’s a people business, too. I think the more upfront and the more transparent you can be and even when things are being said, which look, at this time of year there’s a million things being said. Some are probably true. Some are probably not true. I understand that. I like being transparent with these guys and letting them know where I stand and if I do hear something that comes across the wave, I’ll say yeah, ‘this isn’t the case’ or ‘just hang tight.’ I think showing empathy goes a long way. Probably something 15, 10 years ago I wasn’t good at either.” - A fresh approach. Let’s see if it works. - Daboll Year 1: How far will Giants

Giants' Brian Daboll: Xavier McKinney has true leadership qualities / - - - The New York Giants’ new regime is seeking a new set of leaders to be the face of their rebuild. - On defense, with veteran safety Logan Ryan getting released earlier this month, the Giants are turning to Xavier McKinney, a third-year safety who came into his own last season. - During a press conference at the NFL owners meetings in Florida this week, Giants head coach Brian Daboll mentioned ‘X’ as a potential cornerstone player. - “I think there’s young guys like ‘X,’ Daniel (Jones) and Saquon (Barkley) and then there’s some older guys I’ve gotten to meet as they’re doing rehab in the building, guys like Shep, Martinez (Sterling Shepard, Blake Martinez),’” Daboll said. “It takes everybody to build a culture. And you like to draft young guys and develop them and see them grow.’” - McKinney was a second round pick (36th overall) in the 2020 NFL draft out of Alabama and his career got off to a slow start as he missed the first half of his rookie season with a foot injury. - But since then, McKinney has been a key contributor to the Giants’ defense, starting 20 of the Giants’ last 21 games. Over that period, ‘X’ has made 118 total tackles, defensed 11 passes and intercepted six balls. - McKinney is poised for a leadership role and it has been well-earned. The Giants are trying to build a culture under Daboll (we’ve heard that before) but this regime seems as if it has a solid base to move forward with.

Giants' Brian Daboll has simple plan to fix Kadarius Toney, Kenny Golladay / - - - The New York Giants, under former head coach Joe Judge and former offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, misused wide receivers Kenny Golladay and Kadarius Toney. There’s no two-ways about that. - Golladay was signed to a massive four-year, $72 million deal because he’s a downfield threat capable of beating defenders on contested balls. But when the Giants employed him on offense a season ago, that’s not at all how he was used. - Rarely was Golladay targeted on third-down or in the red zone, and even less frequently was he given the opportunity to win 50-50 balls. That frustration boiled over at times with him screaming at Garrett on national TV at one point. - Similarly, Toney was frustrated due to his misuse. He was a human highlight reel at Florida and should have been used more creatively. Instead, he was often kept inside and targeted on receiver screens. - Both players also battled through injuries, limiting their time on the field. But even if they had stayed healthy, precious few had any confidence that the Giants would have used them correctly. - Newly hired head coach Brian Daboll is here to change all of that and has a very simple plan to get it done. - “You try to do as much work as you can on these guys before they get here to see what have they been successful at and figure out how to use them in the things that they’ve excelled at,” Daboll told reporters on Tuesday. “But you’ve got to see them do the things you’re going to ask them to do in the offense and there’s plays we’re going through right now that, heck, if these guys want to turn inside on this route let’s figure it out when they get here and ask them.” - Talk to the players? Seek their input? Find out what they’re comfortable with and then use them to their strengths? What a novel idea. - “Look, with good players that’s what you need to be successful,” Daboll added. “Those guys are out there doing it and they’re out there playing the one on one game when it’s man to man coverage. Zone is a little bit different, we have to be pretty detailed on our zone assignments and understand the spacing on the quarterback and be where they’re supposed to be but absolutely. I think you’d be foolish if you don’t take input from the guys that are out there doing it.” - Daboll’s approach won’t be specific to just Golladay and Toney. He wants input from all of his players before devising schemes and routes that fit them best. The same will apply to the other receivers, tight ends and running back. It will, of course, also apply to quarterback Daniel Jones.

Patriots to sign ex-Giants safety Jabrill Peppers / - - - There was no bigger advocate for safety Jabrill Peppers than former New York Giants head coach Joe Judge. And when he was sent packing from East Rutherford, it stood to reason that Peppers would follow him out the door. - As it turns out however, Peppers not only followed Judge out the door but followed him all the way to New England. - On Tuesday, it was announced that Peppers had agreed to a one-year deal with the Patriots. - Peppers had his 2021 regular season end early after suffering a ruptured ACL in Week 7 against the Carolina Panthers. Despite the injury occurring mid-season, ESPN reports that Peppers should be back in time for the start of training camp. - The New Jersey native joined the Giants as part of the Odell Beckham Jr. In fact, he was a main cog in said trade — a demand from former general manager Dave Gettleman. - In 61 career games (59 starts), Peppers has recorded 333 tackles (224 solo, 21 for a loss), 13 QB hits, 4.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, 25 passes defensed, four interceptions and one touchdown.

The team has added five new offensive linemen with starting experience in the NFL, many of them on the interior. But one thing the Giants have not done is sign a new starting right tackle. - There’s a method to that madness, however. The 2022 NFL draft is packed full of top-end tackle talent and the Giants fully intend to dip their toe into that pool. - “I’d say we’ll be looking to add . . . that’s an important spot,” head coach Brian Daboll said of the team’s need for a right tackle. - Even if there’s a run on right tackles early, the Giants should still have an option come pick No. 5. Evan Neal (Alabama), Ikem Ekwonu (North Carolina State) and Charles Cross (Mississippi State) are the top three at the position and New York has spent significant time scouting all three. - Assuming things go according to plan and the Giants do end up with one of the trio, their 2022 offensive line might look a little something like this: - - LT Andrew Thomas - LG Mark Glowinski - C Jon Feliciano - RG Max Garcia - Neal/Ekwonu/Cross - - At least on paper, that would be significant improvement over any group the Giants have fielded in the past decade. And it would certainly give quarterback Daniel Jones a legitimate chance to prove his worth behind a capable — even if they’re simply average — offensive line. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - Will Giants draft an O-lineman with their first pick? - Powered By PickUp - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.

Report: Giants have strong interest in Ahmad 'Sauce' Gardner / The 2022 NFL draft is less than a month away
Report: Giants have strong interest in Ahmad 'Sauce' Gardner / The 2022 NFL draft is less than a month away and the New York Giants have a lot of holes to fill. It’s not just about filling positions, but adding depth and youth to a team that needs to rebuild. - Last week, Giants general manager Joe Schoen attended the Cincinnati Bearcats’ pro day, along with some 90 additional front office members from around the league. Bearcats quarterback Desmond Ridder was a major focal point, but so to was cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner. - In fact, Ralph Vacchiano of SNY reports the Giants have a particularly strong interest in Gardner. - With the Giants and Jets holding a combined four top 10 picks in the 2022 NFL draft, it’s inevitable that they’ll focus on some of the same players. And their first battle could be over “Sauce.” - Both New York teams have a strong interest in Cincinnati cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner, and both teams will be bringing him in for one of their Top 30 pre-draft visits, according to an NFL source. And while an official visit doesn’t always mean a team is considering picking a player, Gardner is widely considered the best cornerback in the draft and is clearly in play for the Giants at picks 5 and 7 and the Jets at 4 and 10. - The Giants aren’t alone, of course. Gardner is projected to go somewhere in the top 10 of the first round. The New York Jets, as Vacchiano notes, also have a high interest in Gardner. - Both the Giants and Jets have two top 10 picks this year and while there is some debate if No. 4 is too high to take Gardner, the Jets might just do it to keep the Giants from nabbing him. - As for the Giants. Schoen met with Gardner for dinner after his pro day, and both teams met with him at the combine earlier this month. - Over his three seasons in Cincinnati, Gardner did not give up a single touchdown. He reeled in nine interceptions and two touchdowns as a Bearcat, and even raked in a few sacks in 2021. - The Giants have a big need at corner, especially if James Bradberry goes elsewhere. Gardner is talented, smart and fast. And, at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, his size is perfect for matching up with bigger wideouts on the field. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has

Giants' Joe Schoen addresses release of Logan Ryan / When Joe Schoen was named general manager of the New York
Giants' Joe Schoen addresses release of Logan Ryan / When Joe Schoen was named general manager of the New York Giants earlier this year, he knew he had his hands full. There would be many tough roster decisions to be made especially when it came to veteran players. - One veteran, Logan Ryan — a Pro Bowl caliber safety — was released last week for several reasons. - First and foremost, Ryan was one of the many bloated contracts that Schoen was saddled with by his predecessor, Dave Gettleman, even though releasing him only added $775K in cap space. - Secondly, Ryan, a defensive captain, is likely not in their plans and the new coaching staff wants to install their own leadership group. - “Best decision for the New York Giants,” Schoen said. “We thought it was best talking with the new staff that that was the best. I wish Logan nothing but the best.” - Ryan was immediately inked by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but that is beside the point. The Giants are moving on and are no longer hanging on to players for the sake of doing so. They are truly in a rebuilding mode.

Cardinals sign ex-Giants OL Will Hernandez / - - - Free agency is in full swing, which means that the New York Giants aren’t just looking for players to add, but which players to keep. - Some players don’t give them the choice, though, which is what makes free agency so exciting — you never know which players will end up on each team. - Former Giants offensive lineman Will Hernandez has decided that his time in New York is over. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals on Monday. - Hernandez was drafted in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft (the 34th overall pick). Prior to entering the draft, Hernandez played in 49 games over his career at the University of Texas-El Paso. After the 2016 season, he was named second-team All-American, and after the 2017 season, he was named to the Conference USA first-team. - The Giants had high hopes for Hernandez, who showed real promise as a rookie, but that promise was not realized. 2021 was Hernandez’s worst season in New York, by far, so it’s no real surprise that the Giants didn’t highly pursue him when his contract was up. - Enter the Cardinals, who have decided to sign Hernandez to a one-year contract. He will reunite with one of his college coaches in Arizona, Sean Kugler, who currently serves as the Cardinals’ offensive line coach. He was the head coach at UTEP when Hernandez was a player. - Should the Cards sign Hernandez to a large deal, it may factor into the compensatory pick formula. But if not, he won’t. And, interestingly, the Giants just signed guard Max Garcia, a former Cardinal. - It’s not a swap, per se, but in an odd turn of events, Arizona and New York have “traded” players.

Giants hope to have Sterling Shepard, Blake Martinez back by August / - - - Both wide receiver Sterling Shepard and linebacker Blake Martinez took pay cuts this offseason in order to return to the New York Giants in 2022. They also likely agreed to the salary reduction because they’re coming off of injury and weren’t looking at a strong market. - Martinez, of course, suffered a torn ACL in Week 3 against the Atlanta Falcons. Shepard later suffered a torn Achilles in a Week 15 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Both landed on season-ending injured reserve. - Although they are serious injuries to come back from, Giants general manager Joe Schoen remains hopeful both players will return to the field in August ahead of the 2022 regular season. - “Both those guys are in there every day,” Schoen told reporters on Monday. “Both working hard. I see them at lunch every day. Two guys I really enjoy being around, leaders, busting their butt. I think Blake could be back before Shep, just because of the timeline of the injury, but I’ve been really impressed with both of them and their work ethic and the time that they’re putting in. - “Hopefully by August. Again, we’re not going to rush them along. We don’t play until September. Ease those guys along. Again, they’re two professionals that understand their bodies, leadership, they understand their process. The goal is to have them on the field in August.” - The news was not nearly as positive for offensive lineman Nick Gates, who suffered a stomach-turning leg fracture in Week 2 against the Washington Commanders. He required at least six surgeries and recently suffered a minor setback in his recovery. - - — Giants taking a wait-and-see approach with OL Nick Gates, per Joe Schoen. I heard recently Gates underwent a procedure as he recovers from leg injury and there is still hope he’s ready for training camp. - — Jordan Raanan (@JordanRaanan) March 28, 2022 - - - There remains some lingering hope that Gates could return to the field this season, but there are still many hurdles to clear. - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your

Joe Schoen called Saquon Barkley as Giants' trade rumors swirled / - - - At the NFL scouting
Joe Schoen called Saquon Barkley as Giants' trade rumors swirled / - - - At the NFL scouting combine in February, New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen was asked about his willingness to trade certain players. At the time, only wide receiver Kadarius Toney was crossed off the list. - Asked specifically about running back Saquon Barkley, Schoen indicated a willingness to deal his star offensive player. - “I’m open to everything,” Schoen said at the time. “I’ll listen to anybody if it’s trading a couple players. I’m not going to say the entire roster, we’re open for business on the entire roster, but if anybody’s going to call and they’re interested in any of our players, I’ll certainly listen.” - Those comments took on a life of their own. In the month since, Barkley’s trade speculation has run high and the Giants have even received some calls. However, as it turns out, they’re not actively shopping Barkley. In fact, they don’t even necessarily seem interested in dealing him at all. - But because his combine comments sparked such a viral news wave, Schoen personally reached out to Barkley to clarify his stance. - “After I talked to you guys (at the combine), but maybe an hour or whatever it was, I called him right away and he answered,” Schoen told reporters on Monday at the NFL owners meetings. “We’ve had a great relationship since I’ve been here. I’ve got a really good relationship with his agent, and I spoke with her during the combine, too.” - Ultimately, Schoen says, calls are coming in on Barkley but the team is not actively looking to move him. - “That was taken a little bit out of context at the combine,” Schoen added. “I have not called one team on Saquon Barkley, okay? Everybody ran with that from the combine, I said I would listen if people called on any player, so it would be irresponsible if I didn’t. That doesn’t mean I’m going to do every deal, so I haven’t called one team on Saquon Barkley. I’ve gotten calls about a few of our players and he’s one where a couple teams have reached out, but again, I’m not shopping Saquon Barkley. - “It’d be irresponsible if a team calls — I think 31 other GMs would say the same thing — if somebody is going to call and offer you something ridiculous, you’re going to listen. It doesn’t mean you’re going to do any deal or you’re going to say ‘yes’ to it. We’ve got an offensive head coach (Brian Daboll). He likes to have as many weapons and toys as he can.” - Schoen, Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will get their first on-field look at Barkley in roughly two weeks when the Giants conduct their pre-2022 NFL draft minicamp in East Rutherford. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - - - -

Giants' Brian Daboll offers positive update on Daniel Jones' neck injury / One of the issues surrounding the New York Giants’ decision to stick with fourth-year former first rounder Daniel Jones as quarterback this season was his health. - Jones missed the final six games of last season with a neck injury and there was no clarity on his ailment. Even as Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll took over for Joe Judge and Dave Gettleman, uncertainty lingered. - But on Tuesday at the annual NFL owners meetings at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida, Giants head coach Brian Daboll said Jones’ neck would not keep him from taking the field this spring at the team’s OTAs. Those will take place next month. - - Great news: Brian Daboll says Daniel Jones (neck) will be healthy and ready to go when the #Giants hit the field this spring https://t.co/Bvim1Makbw - — Pat Leonard (@PLeonardNYDN) March 29, 2022 - - - Jones’ fifth-year option is due in May and the Giants want to see if he is worth hitching their wagon to. His first three seasons were riddled with injuries — both his and his teammates’ — and as a result, his play was a wild rollercoaster ride with more more dips than rises. - “We have until May 2 to decide that,” Schoen said on Monday. “Like I said at the combine, we’re going to still continue to develop that and consider that. With guys coming in in two weeks (for the start of the offseason program), it’s a real advantage. We’ll get to be around guys in the building for four weeks or three weeks before the draft and have a veteran minicamp right before the draft. Again, we’ll continue to have those conversations as we move forward.” - The Giants were stung last season by a lack of readiness and depth at the quarterback position. Jones’ injury left the Giants in the hands of Mike Glennon and then Jake Fromm, neither of whom could rally the offense. - This year, Schoen has already made sure the Giants are sufficiently covered at quarterback. He signed veteran Tyrod Taylor to back up Jones. - “It was a priority,” said Schoen of the backup quarterback role. “I go back to — I can’t remember if it was my opening press conference or I said it at the combine to you guys, backup quarterback would always be a priority of mine. - “Where I was last year, we got a little bit lucky at the value that we were able to get at what we thought was a good player at that value. I go back to my time in Miami, Ryan Tannehill gets hurt, tears his ACL, Matt Moore came in, kept the season alive and we went to the playoffs. We lost to Pittsburgh, but again, I think that’s an important position to have where someone can come in and steady the ship and win a few ballgames

Giants re-sign international RB Sandro Platzgummer / As the New York Giants prepare for a spring minicamp and summer training camp, they need to stack their roster with talent for positional competitions to take place. The re-signing of Sandro Platzgummer is one of many moves that the Giants are making to do so. - Platzgummer is a prospect from Austria who was with the Giants the past several seasons via the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program. - While Platzgummer has not yet made the final roster, the Austrian medical student did break off a highlight 48-yard rush during the 2021 preseason against the New York Jets, creating excitement from nearly everyone on the sideline, including fellow running back Saquon Barkley. - In 2022, Platzgummer’s international practice squad exemption expires. So if the Giants want to stash him on their reserve unit again this year, it will have to come at the expense of another player. - Although it’s a feather in Platzgummer’s cap to be re-signed, he’ll now have to convince general manager Joe Schoen, head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka that he’s worth keeping around.

Giants willing to select best player available in 2022 NFL draft / - - - The New York
Giants willing to select best player available in 2022 NFL draft / - - - The New York Giants are heading into the 2022 NFL draft in good position to solve a slew of needs on their subpar roster. - General manager Joe Schoen is aware of the clamoring from the ownership group and the fans to upgrade the offensive line — and he may just do so — but he’s not locked into that mindset. - Schoen knows the Giants have so many needs, he can pick a player at just about any position and he would not be wrong in doing so. - “Really, honestly, right now, we’re trying to find, ‘Hey, who are seven players we like?’ I mentioned this at the combine, if we find seven players that we like as players, as people, that’ll be good for the organization, I’ll sleep good at night and then we’ll get into that, ‘Maybe we need 10 guys, maybe we need 11, maybe we need 13,’ if we decide to move back, depending on where we are,” Schoen told reporters on Monday. - “We have enough needs on the roster that I think you can go take the best player available.” - Schoen has been adding veteran linemen all offseason, especially on the interior of the line, and appears to be lining up some of the top offensive tackles in the first round of the draft. The Giants hold the firth and seventh selections in this year’s draft. - It’s almost a certainty that one of the top three rated tackles — Alabama’s Evan Neal, Ikem Ekwonu of North Carolina State and Mississippi State’s Charles Cross — will be available at No. 5 (and even at No. 7 should Carolina select a quarterback at No. 6), but Schoen is keenly aware of the team’s other needs. - The Giants are in the market for a safety after releasing Logan Ryan last week and if they trade James Bradberry, they’ll be looking to grab a top corner. Tight end is also a glaring need as is inside linebacker, and — of course, as always — a pass rusher.

Giants' Joe Schoen still open to extending James Bradberry's contract / - - - New York Giants general
Giants' Joe Schoen still open to extending James Bradberry's contract / - - - New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen would like to stick to his guns and not extend some of the bloated player contracts he inherited from his predecessor, Dave Gettleman. - There will have to be exceptions to that, of course, as in the potential case of star cornerback James Bradberry. - Bradberry has been the subject of trade rumors due to his high salary cap hit and the Giants’ dire need for salary cap space, and a recent New York Daily News report says the team close to dealing him. - However, while speaking with reporters at the NFL owners meetings on Monday, Schoen left the door open to extending Bradberry’s contract. - “He’s a good corner who was a Pro Bowler two years ago (2020), and he’s 28-years old and can still play at a high level and he’s on our roster,” Schoen said of Bradberry. “People have called about certain players and people have value. Again, like I said, he’s 28-years old. He’s two years removed from a Pro Bowl season. He’s still a high caliber starting corner. - “If it’s the right offer and it makes sense for the New York Giants, then I’ve got to consider (it). . . a last resort is converting and restructuring contracts, so there’s ways we can get creative if we need to.” - Bradberry is entering the third year of a three-year, $43.5 million deal which carries a salary cap hit of $21,863,889 for 2022. The Giants could simply release him but they would still be on the hook for approximately $12 million in the form of a dead cap charge. - The Giants don’t want to trade the 28-year-old former Pro Bowler if they don’t have to, but they almost have to. They are barely under the league’s $208.6 million salary cap and Bradberry’s is the only contract on their roster they can terminate or renegotiate that would provide them the much needed salary cap space to operate this season. - There has been some reported interest in Bradberry by teams around the league, but the sticking point has been his lofty salary. Teams are asking the Giants to absorb a portion of that to level out the trade — something the Giants are reportedly open to in the right scenario. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please

Giants' Tim McDonnell attends UNC pro day / The New York Giants continue their scouting of potential 2022 NFL draft picks on Monday as Tim McDonnell attended the University of North Carolina’s pro day. - The director of player personnel for Big Blue brought quarterback coach Shea Tierney along for the ride to check out UNC quarterback Sam Howell. - - List of NFL executives at UNC pro-day to see QB Sam Howell include: Kevin Colbert & Brandon Hunt (Steelers), Jeff Ireland (Saints), Chris Spielman (Lions), Pat Stewart (Panthers), Marty Hurney (Commanders), and Tim McDonnell (Giants). https://t.co/q7wzwhmrwy - — Jim Nagy (@JimNagy_SB) March 28, 2022 - - - Hailing from Indian Trail, North Carolina, the 6-foot-1, 220-pound quarterback has made quite the name for himself. During his three years at UNC, he threw for over 10,000 yards and 92 touchdowns. He also ran in 17 touchdowns and caught two more. - Howell is certainly not afraid to score, and definitely not afraid to run, but Daniel Jones is still young and has not had an opportunity to fully prove himself behind an onslaught of offensive injuries and inconsistencies. - Given the unlikelihood that the Giants draft a quarterback in 2022, the purpose of this trip is more about establishing general manager Joe Schoen’s evaluation process for 2023. It’s a new regime, a new system and a new process for the entire front office staff and roster of players to learn. - This year is for rebuilding personnel around Schoen’s vision and establishing processes for next year, starting with who scouts players, how they are evaluated and what Schoen is looking for from his staff.

He played in 29 games the last two years for the Cardinals, including 11 starts last season when he was named a Pro Bowl alternate. - This is likely a depth signing for the Giants, who have been adding interior lineman the past few weeks such as Mark Glowinski, Jon Feliciano and Jamil Douglas to go with incumbents Shane Lemieux and Ben Bredeson.

Giants trade down in latest Touchdown Wire mock draft / - - - The 2022 NFL draft is just a month away and the mock drafts are in full swing. In his latest mock of the first round, Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar has the New York Giants addressing several needs while preparing for the future. - The Giants hold the fifth and seventh selections in the first round of this year’s draft and are in the driver’s seat to select a top stud as well as trade for more and future draft capital. Farrar has them doing just that. - Round 1, Pick No. 5: TRADE (with Pittsburgh) - The Giants cash in right away by accepting a trade with the Steelers, who use the pick to select Liberty quarterback Malik Willis. - In return, the Giants will likely receive a package of picks that include the 20th and 52nd selections in this draft, the Steelers’ 2023 first rounder and perhaps an early Day 3 pick in either this draft or the next. - The trade makes sense as several of the Giants’ targets are off the board. Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton, Michigan edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, Alabama tackle Evan Neal and Cincinnati cornerback Ahmad ‘Sauce’ Gardner were gone by the time the Giants were on the clock. - Round 1, Pick No. 7: Charles Cross, OT, Mississippi State - A ‘plug-and-play’ solution at right tackle who NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein sees as a combination of Tristan Wirfs and Taylor Moten. Cross has great size and agility and would be the perfect bookend to another former first round pick, left tackle Andrew Thomas. - Round 1, Pick No. 20: Jermaine Johnson II, EDGE, Florida State - The Giants’ pass rush has been anemic for years now and they need an edge presence that can play all three downs. Johnson can be that player. The Georgia transfer got lost in the shuffle but is now seen as a top prospect. - Johnson is 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds with room to grow and has 4.58 speed. The Giants have not had a player of this caliber since Justin Tuck, and Johnson may just be a more athletic version of the Giant great. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - NFL Draft: What will NYG do with first 2 picks? - Powered By PickUp - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - -

Giants' John Mara: 'God willing' the offensive line will be better / - - - The New York Giants are in the midst of a rebuild and what better place to start than the offensive line, the poster child for all of their recent offensive ills. - The Giants entered the offseason with just one position — left tackle (Andrew Thomas) — spoken for, which is an unusual predicament when rebuilding a line. Usually, team have everything but the left tackle in place. - With additions at guard, center and tackle in the form of free agents Mark Glowinski, Jon Feliciano, Matt Gono and Jamil Douglas, the Giants have added some starters and key depth to a unit that also sports holdovers Shane Lemieux, Ben Bredeson, Matt Peart and Nick Gates among others. - That gives Giants co-owner John Mara some hope. But that came with a prayer to the good Lord above. - - John Mara: “Our offensive line should be better, god willing.” - — Zack Rosenblatt (@ZackBlatt) March 27, 2022 - - - “Our offensive line should be better,” Mara said. “God willing.” - The Giants also currently own the fifth, seventh and 36th overall picks and are expected to address the line with one or more of those selections. They will be in excellent position to grab one of the three top tackles in the draft in Alabama’s Evan Neal, Ikem Ekwonu of North Carolina State and Mississippi State’s Charles Cross. - Last year, the line was hit with a slew of injuries early on and the team was forced to trade for backup players as well as scour the waiver wire for viable options. As a result, the line never got its legs under it and the offense was rendered dysfunctional and finished 31st in the league.

Giants' John Mara won't settle with Brian Flores: 'Truth will come out' / - - - The New York Giants have been relatively tight-lipped since being slapped with a lawsuit from Brian Flores, who interviewed for the team’s head coaching position earlier this offseason. - Flores alleges the Giants ran him through a “sham” process to give the impression a minority candidate was a serious contender for the job. In fact, Flores was so certain of that he filed the lawsuit before his interview process with the organization had even been completed. - As Flores left East Rutherford following his final interview, the Giants were immediately served with the lawsuit. - The team issued two statements after news of the lawsuit broke — the first denied the allegations and the second insinuated that Flores was flat-out lying. And that was a stance Giants co-owner John Mara doubled down on while speaking to the media at the NFL owners meetings in Florida on Sunday. - “I’m not settling,” Mara said bluntly. “Because the allegations are false and we’re very comfortable with our hiring process. It was a fair process and we ended up making the decision we made based on a lot of factors, none of which had anything to do with race.” - As part of the lawsuit, Flores shared an unfortunate text exchange between he and New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who has a history with the Giants organization. In them, Belichick congratulates Flores for getting the job but had been mistaking him for Brian Daboll, whom the team ultimately hired as their next head coach. - Flores claims the mistaken text is proof of systemic racism in the NFL’s hiring practices and that Belichick still has heavy influence in East Rutherford. - The Giants also denied that claim in a previous statement, but Mara chose to elaborate on it a bit anyway. - “I haven’t spoken or communicated with Bill since we played [the Patriots] in the preseason last summer and to my knowledge nobody in the organization has communicated with him either,” Mara said. - Why hasn’t Mara contacted Belichick for clarification on the whole situation? - “Why should I?” Mara remarked. “We made our hiring decision and we’re happy with that decision. I think the truth will come out eventually: He didn’t speak with anybody in our organization.” - And that — for now — is that. Mara and the Giants will see Flores in court. - - RelatedIf Giants request arbitration, Brian Flores wants it to be deniedGiants' Joe Schoen, Brian Daboll decline to address Brian Flores lawsuitBrian Flores' class action lawsuit against NFL, Giants will remain active - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - -

John Mara confirms Giants not actively shopping Saquon Barkley / - - - One of the bigger names that has been floated around in trade talks this offseason is New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley. However, although it has been heavily talked about, it appears a deal for Barkley is not imminent. - Barkley, of course, was the Giants’ first-round pick (second overall) in the 2018 NFL draft and went on to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. But ever since then, Barkley has been riddled with injury and many wonder if he is even worth a second contract from Big Blue at this point. - Giants co-owner John Mara met with reporters at the NFL owners meetings in Florida on Sunday and shut down any notion that a Barkley trade was actively being discussed. He did, however, leave the door open for that to change. - - John Mara on Saquon Barkley: "We’re not shopping Saquon but Joe’s the general manager. If he and the head coach want to make a personnel decision and they have a conviction about it I’m not going to interfere with it. But that’s not something we’re actively looking to do.'' - — Paul Schwartz (@NYPost_Schwartz) March 27, 2022 - - - “We’re not shopping Saquon but Joe’s the general manager. If he and the head coach want to make a personnel decision and they have a conviction about it, I’m not going to interfere with it. But that’s not something we’re actively looking to do,” Mara said. - Barkley’s value has never been lower after failing to do much during the 2021 season returning from a major knee injury. - Many believe that Barkley was not fully healthy last season and if he is able to get back to a healthy state behind what will hopefully be an improved offensive line, maybe he can get back closer to the player he was in his rookie year. - Many fans are hopeful the Giants can fix the offensive line once and for all in the upcoming draft next month. - Although Mara has said they aren’t shopping Barkley, if the right offer came along general manager Joe Schoen would certainly move him as every player has his price. After all, Schoen said the only untouchable was 2021 first-round pick Kadarius Toney. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - Will Saquon Barkley be traded this offseason? - Powered By PickUp - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error

Report: Giants close to finalizing trade of James Bradberry / - - - The New York Giants have intended to trade cornerback James Bradberry since the onset of free agency and now it’s finally going to happen. - Despite an unexpectedly dry market, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports that the Giants are close to finalizing a trade of Bradberry. And in addition to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts are also in play. - GM Joe Schoen is expected to unload the team’s best defensive back soon, according to league sources here at The Breakers luxury resort in Palm Beach, Fla. - The Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts are teams to watch in a Bradberry trade, sources say. - What the Giants get in return for Bradberry remains to be seen, but the involvement of three teams can only help improve New York’s eventual haul. - Still, the Giants aren’t necessarily pleased to have to trade Bradberry. While speaking at the NFL owners meetings in Florida on Sunday, co-owner John Mara praised the veteran and admitted his departure would “hurt.” - “That would hurt because he’s been a very good player and he’s been a consummate professional for us,” Mara told reporters. “But the cap situation is what it is. So we’d have to consider all options there.” - If Bradberry is traded in the coming days, it will mark the second veteran departure from the secondary this month. The team had previously released safety Logan Ryan, eating a ton of dead cap in the process. - “It was a decision that Brian and Joe made, they decided they wanted to move on so I wasn’t gonna block it,” Mara said. “I was sorry to see him go. I thought he was a good player who did some great thigs for our community. But if our head coach and general manager make a football decision, I’m not gonna block it.” - With needs at both cornerback and safety, keep an eye on Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner and Kyle Hamilton when the Giants come up at No. 5 and No. 7 in the 2022 NFL draft. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - Will Bradberry be on NYG roster to start next season? - Powered By PickUp - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks

Giants' John Mara offers emphatic support of Daniel Jones / New York Giants co-owner John Mara is not backing down
Giants' John Mara offers emphatic support of Daniel Jones / New York Giants co-owner John Mara is not backing down on his support of quarterback Daniel Jones. In fact, he’s doubling and tripling down. - While speaking to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post at the NFL owners meetings in Palm Beach, Mara admitted to a sad reality: the Giants have not fielded an even remotely competitive team since Jones was drafted sixth overall in 2019. - Mara blamed injuries for some of the team’s woes. - “You tell me what quarterback could have thrived over these last couple years with what we had out there on offense?” Mara said. “I was in a health and safety committee meeting the other day and they showed our injuries over the last four years as compared with [other teams]. The last four years, we had more injuries than anybody in the league and a lot of ’em were on offense. So let’s give him a chance with a new staff and a better offensive line and we think he’ll be very successful.” - The Giants are the NFL’s most-injured team since 2009. That’s an undeniably dose of reality. - Beyond just that, Mara has seen flashes in Jones that prove his ceiling remains high. One game he cited was not the comeback victory over Tampa Bay during Jones’ rookie season, but a 27-21 overtime victory in New Orleans this past season. - That was a win that came with the Giants sporting one of their thinnest rosters in recent memory. - “We still have a lot of confidence in Daniel and think he’s going to be a very good quarterback if we just put the right pieces around him and give him a little bit more continuity and stability,” Mara said. “He hasn’t had that since he’s been here. Let’s give him a chance to prove himself. He’s shown flashes of it, for sure. - “You go back to that game in New Orleans, he played as well as anybody ever could have expected. We think there’s a lot more of that left in him if we can just put the right pieces around him.” - The signing of veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor doesn’t change Mara’s opinion on Jones. It does, however, give him confidence in the event Jones, who has a history with injuries, misses time. - “I think having Tyrod Taylor will certainly let us sleep better at night, knowing that if something happens to Daniel we have somebody who can walk in there and at least allow us to compete and win some games,” Mara added. - Ultimately, Mara says, 2022 will be The Daniel Jones Show. Report: Giants showing interest in LSU CB Cordale Flott / The New York Giants are one of the teams who hold a pre-draft visit with LSU cornerback Cordale Flott, reports Mike Kaye of Pro Football Network. - While Flott mostly played the nickel role at LSU, his size gives him the ability to play outside at cornerback. During his three seasons at LSU, Flott produced 98 tackles (5.5 for loss), 10 pass breakups, an interception, and 2 forced fumbles. - Flott hasn’t tested his speed or agility this offseason, but he has proven his toughness as a sound tackler at LSU. - While teams have been buzzing around another LSU corner — Derek Stingley Jr. — they’ve stumbled upon Flott and his tenacious play. At 6-feet and under 180 pounds, Flott might be a bit light to handle the bigger receivers in the league. - Teams will be eyeing Flott’s pro day, which will take place on April 6. If he shows significant speed and agility, the Giants and other teams in the market for secondary help will take notice. - Currently, Flott is ranked 415th on PFNs draft board. That equates to being undrafted. It’s unusual that the Giants — or any team — would use a pre-draft visit on a player who could go undrafted, so there’s something possibly brewing here.

2022 NFL draft: Giants to meet with Washington TE Cade Otton / The New York Giants will likely be adding a tight end in the 2022 NFL draft and have been meeting with a slew of possible draftees this spring. - The latest tight end the Giants are showing interest in in Washington’s Cade Otten, who has quietly risen up the mock draft boards as a ‘pro ready’ prospect. - - #Washington TE Cade Otton has met with a plethora of teams either formally at the combine, virtually via Zoom, and has top-30 visit coming up. List includes #Titans, #Cardinals, #Buccaneers, #Giants(2x), #Bills, #Raiders, #Cowboys and #Seahawks. - Otton is an exciting TE prospect. - — Justin M (@JustinM_NFL) March 23, 2022 - - - Otten fits the physical prototype at the position at 6-feet-5 and 247 pounds. His senior season was interrupted by games missed to COVID-19 and a foot injury, but his tape shows that he could be a complete tight end at the pro level despite his tamped-down statistics. - “Otton is an instinctive route-runner with agile feet in tight quarters and a great feel for changing speeds inside the route,” writes NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein. - “He has sudden, reliable hands, and is skilled and athletic enough to shine against man or zone coverages. As with all UW tight ends, Otton was expected to block for the run game and did so with adequate technique. He will need to bolster his play strength and aggression levels to better execute his blocking itinerary at the next level. He’s an ascending combination tight end with starting talent. He should become a more productive pro than college player as a likely Day 2 selection.” - The Giants have picks 36, 67 and 81 on Day 2 of the draft. It’s possible Otten falls to the fourth round, but don’t count on it. This is a solid year for tight ends but the ones that can both block and make plays in the passing game will go quickly and Otten is considered in that group.

Man convicted in shooting of ex-Giants CB Corey Ballentine / Francisco Mendez, the 21-year-old man who shot former New York Giants cornerback Corey Ballentine and killed his best friend, Dwane Simmons, has been convicted. - A Topeka, Kansas jury found Mendez guilty of first-degree murder and four counts of attempted murder on Friday. The three additional counts of attempted murder stem from the other men — Channon Ross, Kevin Neal Jr. and J.J. Letcher Jr. — who were also with Ballentine and Simmons at the time. - The shooting occurred in the early morning hours of April 28, 2019. Ballentine had just been selected in the sixth-round of the NFL draft by the Giants, and the Washburn college football teammates were attending an off-campus party. - Simmons died on the scene. Ballentine was struck in the buttocks and required medical treatment. The other three men managed to escape without injury. - “I think he helped me get here every step of the way,” Ballentine said of Simmons in July of 2019. “When I was out on the field myself, he would come out and join me and I kind of feeling I’m doing it for both of us. If he was here now, he would love to see where I’m at now. - “I’m going to keep him in my heart and at the same time strive for the goals of the team and my own personal goals and just do my best.” - Ballentine spent his first season and a half with the Giants before being waived in November of 2020. He was later claimed by the New York Jets and remained in East Rutherford through the 2020 season. - In 2021, Ballentine spent the season with the Detroit Lions. And if fans can find it on television, they will watch. - So, how does one go about generating a rooting interest? It may be as simple as cheering on former players of their favorite NFL team(s). Giants not seriously considering a trade of Saquon Barkley? / The New York Giants have been relatively active (on the low end) thus far during free agency, and that’s not likely to change before the 2022 NFL draft. - The Giants need to create cap space for incoming draftees, which is why there has been much talk about cornerback James Bradberry. He isn’t the only one potentially on the trading block, though, as general manager Joe Schoen has said he’s “open to anything,” including trading star running back Saquon Barkley. - The last two seasons have been tough for Barkley. At the beginning of the 2020 season, he was carted off the field during a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It would be revealed that he tore his ACL and was done for the season after just two games. - In 2021, the Giants picked up the fifth-year of Barkley’s contract, but he struggled on the field. Maybe it was the pandemic, maybe it was battling ankle issues, maybe it was sharing time with Devontae Booker or maybe it was a combination of everything. Regardless of the reason, it’s not hard to see why Schoen might be interested in trading Barkley. - Still, it’s hard to justify. If you look at the Giants scoring since Barkley joined the team, you will see that he accounts for over 25% of the teams scoring when he’s on the field. That’s a lot of scoring to give up, not to mention the way other defenses have to prepare for a threat like Barkley. Given the teams inability to get to the end zone in 2021, losing a guy like Barkley hurts. - And that’s why the Giants may not be seriously considering a Barkley trade. - - From what I’ve been hearing, btw, I don’t get the impression #Giants are seriously considering trading RB Saquon Barkley. At least not right now. - All about James Bradberry at the moment. https://t.co/CKYd0vLzfS - — Zack Rosenblatt (@ZackBlatt) March 26, 2022 - - - That said, the entire Giants’ front office is brand new. It’s not a secret that the team needs to rebuild after years of prior management gaffes and guffaws. Could that include Barkley? Sounds like it definitely could. Is it likely? Probably not. - The Giants are already devoid of talent — particularly game-changing talent — so while trading Barkley may clear cap space, it creates another need and only further depletes the roster. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning -

Report: Chiefs interested in trade for Giants CB James Bradberry / The New York Giants have been and remain committed to trading cornerback James Bradberry in an effort to clear salary cap space. - However, at least early on, the market for Bradberry failed to develop. That threw a wrench in the Giants’ plans, who decided they would not release the veteran if they couldn’t secure a trade. They also later decided that they’d be willing to eat some salary in any potential trade. - The latter likely sparked some further discussion. - Nate Taylor and Dan Duggan of The Athletic report that the Kansas City Chiefs are zeroing in on Bradberry and are now interested in a trade. - - https://t.co/vOMHUTpM1i - — Dan Duggan (@DDuggan21) March 26, 2022 - - - Bradberry to the Chiefs always seemed like a logical outcome, but things had been relatively silent until now. And although Kansas City is interested in a trade, how much salary they are willing to take on and what they’re willing to send back will determine the outcome. - But the Giants are desperate. They know Bradberry has to be moved in order to sign their 2022 NFL draft class, so there aren’t many bargaining chips they can use. As long as the Chiefs are willing to assume a good portion of Bradberry’s salary, general manager Joe Schoen is likely to sign off. - Bradberry is in the final year of a three-year contract and has a base salary of $13.4 million. Giants have top-30 visits with CB Ahmad Gardner, TE Trey McBride / Two of the top players at their positions in the upcoming NFL draft are on the New York Giants’ list of Top 30 visits this spring. - Cincinnati cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner and tight end Trey McBride of Colorado State are on the Giants’ dance card in the upcoming weeks. - - New York Jets, New York Giants, Eagles and Seahawks bringing in Cincinnati corner Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner for official top-30 visits and will also meet with Detroit Lions: @PFN365 #Jets #NYGiants #Seahawks https://t.co/P2tzCMK9wj https://t.co/GTtzCWQ8YB - — Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) March 25, 2022 - - - Gardner has rocketed up the board the past month after acing the Combine and other workouts. His size and speed combination (6-foot-3, 190 pounds with 4.41 speed) along with his competitive edge and football acumen have made him a likely Top 5 pick come late April. The chance of Gardner falling to the Giants at No. 5 or No. 7 is dwindling by the day. - Detroit (Gardner’s home town), Houston and the Jets – the three teams who pick before the Giants this year – are all interested. The Giants are in need of a top corner should they trade James Bradberry. Gardner did not allow a touchdown in his three seasons with the Bearcats. That is impressive, but DeAndre Baker also had a similar distinction and look how that turned out. - McBride is probably the top tight end in this class used on his production. He is a 6-foot-4, 260 pounder who has a solid all-around game. - - #CSU TE Trey McBride has met with a plethora of teams either formally at the combine, virtually via Zoom, and has top-30 visits coming up. List includes #Titans, #Bengals, #Buccaneers, #Giants, #Jets, #Bills. - McBride is an exciting TE prospect. - — Justin M (@JustinM_NFL) March 25, 2022 - - - In 12 games last season, McBride caught 90 passes for 1,121 yards but only one of those receptions went for a touchdown. He also scored a touchdown on a 69-yard running play. - The Giants recently signed Ricky Seals-Jones to augment their tight end room, which is barren after losing Evan Engram in free agency and releasing Kyle Rudolph and Kaden Smith. McBride is a Day 2 pick and the Giants currently have the 36th, 67th, and 81st selections in Rounds 2 and 3. - - RelatedJon Feliciano has trust in Giants' front office, coaching staffGiants select two game changers in first Chad Reuter mock draftGiants hold virtual meeting with Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton - - List - - Giants sign WR Richie James: 3 things to know - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - -

Jon Feliciano has trust in Giants' front office, coaching staff / NFL free agency started less than two weeks ago
Jon Feliciano has trust in Giants' front office, coaching staff / NFL free agency started less than two weeks ago and the New York Giants’ front office has been busy. Players have signed, players have been released, and the newly appointed coaching staff is scrambling to make it all work. - One of the things aiding in putting this team together is bringing in players who are familiar with the new staff. Recently, the Giants agreed to terms with Justin Ellis, who has previously played under defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. - Jon Feliciano is another play who joined that list, although his familiarity is with general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll. - Feliciano was born in New York, but grew up in Florida after his parents split up when he was three. He attended the University of Miami and was drafted in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL draft by the then-Oakland Raiders. He would play four seasons with the Raiders before landing with the aforementioned Bills, who released him when free agency started. - In addition to Schoen and Daboll, Feliciano has also spent part of his four-year career working alongside Giants offensive line coach Bobby Johnson. - “Just knowing what kind of guys they are, they’re just good guys and good coaches,” Feliciano said, via Giants.com. “There are good coaches around everywhere, but it’s hard to find good people. And it starts with people. Daboll and Bobby and Joe, they’re people you can trust. When you can trust somebody, you know they just want the best for you. You know whatever they’re saying or whatever they’re coaching at the moment, it’s for the benefit of the team and benefit for you as a player.” - While he’s listed as a guard, where he has all but two of his 43 career starts, Feliciano considers himself a center. And given the injury issues Nick Gates is dealing with, it’s a near certainty Feliciano starts in 2022. - His familiarity with the front office and other players on the field reduces the time it will take to integrate Feliciano with the rest of the team. His ties to New York will make the transition from Buffalo to New York City easier to manage, which means he will be able to focus on football. - “I just want to kick some butt,” Feliciano said. “It just comes natural. I can’t explain it. As soon as I put on the helmet and I step out on the field, I just turn into a different person. And that’s not going to change. I’ll still be there. If someone does something, I’ll be the first one to get there.” - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - -

Giants select two game changers in first Chad Reuter mock draft / With all the trades and quarterback movement this
Giants select two game changers in first Chad Reuter mock draft / With all the trades and quarterback movement this offseason, the NFL draft isn’t expected to be “quarterback” draft. - Think again, says NFL.com’s Chad Reuter. The NFL is always about the quarterback and in his latest mock draft, Reuter shows us which teams could be in the market for new signal callers. - The New York Giants aren’t one of them, however. With the first selection, Reuter has Jacksonville taking Michigan edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson and we’ve heard that is where they are leaning. - But at Nos. 2 and 3, Reuter has Detroit and Atlanta (via a trade with Houston) grabbing quarterbacks — Liberty’s Malik Willis and Pitt’s Kenny Pickett. At No. 4, the Jets take Georgia pass rusher/defensive end Travon Walker. - At No. 5, Reuter mocks Alabama tackle Evan Neal to the Giants. - The Giants did not re-sign veteran Nate Solder at right tackle, and Neal played that position his sophomore year at Alabama. Seems like a natural fit. - At No. 6, Carolina also takes a quarterback in Matt Corral of Ole Miss. - That leaves the Giants with several studs to choose from at No. 7: Oregon edge Kayvon Thibodeaux, tackle/guard Ikem Ekwonu of N.C. State and the player Reuter mocks to them here: Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton. - Hamilton’s 40-yard dash time (4.59 official at combine; 4.56 unofficial at pro day) should be of no concern to NFL teams that value his range, football instincts and tackling ability. The Giants need a partner for Xavier McKinney in the defensive backfield, and Hamilton has the skill set to become a special player at the next level. - Giant fans would have little issue of things unfolded this way. They need a tackle in the worst way and getting the best one in the draft to plug in that hole is a huge bonus. - Add a freaky playmaker/leader on defense in Hamilton on top that and you can pack up your tent right there. The draft is a home run.

Giants hold virtual meeting with Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton / The New York Giants are one of the few teams who have reportedly met with Notre Dame safety and likely top-10 pick, Kyle Hamilton. - Notre Dame’s pro day was held on Friday in South Bend. - - Met with Kyle Hamilton post Pro Day. - Former Irish safety said he ran a 4.56 in the 40-yard dash, which was his sole workout today. Hamilton said he’s already had Zoom meetings with the Seahawks, Giants and Saints. Bills up next. - — Pete Sampson (@PeteSampson_) March 25, 2022 - - - Teams that do not have a top-10 pick in this draft likely won’t get close to selecting the 6-foot-4, 220 pound freak of a defensive back. Hamilton actually bettered his 40 time from the NFL Combine, something he did not have to do but did. - - Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton (@MoveTheSticks' No. 3 prospect in the draft) clocks a 4.56 unofficial 40 at pro day after posting 4.59 official at NFL Scouting Combine. https://t.co/OP0UoihUV7 - — NFL Draft (@NFLDraft) March 25, 2022 - - - The Giants hold the fifth and seventh overall selections in next month’s draft and even they may not get a shot at Hamilton. The Jacksonville Jaguars, who have the first overall pick, aren’t likely to take Hamilton, but the next three teams — the Detroit Lions, Houston Texans and New York Jets — will all take a long hard look. - The Giants could pass on Hamilton at No. 5 in favor of an offensive tackle and hope that Carolina passes on him with the sixth pick. Still, whichever team ended up with him will have a special athlete in their midst.

Giants' Kadarius Toney named a potential 2022 breakout player / - - - The New York Giants are a team in transition but the 2022 season will still have some highs to go with the lows. Some of those highs will be in the form of breakout players. - Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine, in his recent article listing each team’s breakout player, believes that second-year wide receiver Kadarius Toney will fulfill the promise he showed as a rookie last year. - New general manager Joe Schoen mentioned Toney as the only untouchable player on his roster this offseason, indicating the new coaching staff has plans for the speedy former first rounder out of Florida. - The New York Giants offense figures to be much better in 2022, and Kadarius Toney could be one of the biggest beneficiaries. - The Giants are replacing coordinator Jason Garrett as the primary play-caller with new head coach Brian Daboll, who helped craft a Bills offense that finished in the top 10 in passing in both 2020 and 2021. The hope is that Daboll will be able to help Daniel Jones improve in the way that Buffalo QB Josh Allen has. - That could unlock Toney’s massive potential. He struggled to carve out a role as a rookie because of a litany of injuries and a couple of trips to the reserve/COVID-19 list. However, he showcased what he can do with the ball in his hands with a 10-catch, 189-yard performance against Dallas. - He missed seven games last season and had inconsistent usage when he was on the field. With a new offensive staff in place, the hope that Toney can become an elite offensive weapon is renewed. - That last paragraph is the caveat emptor here. Toney was shelved by a slew of different injuries and ailments (including COVID) which kept him off the field last season. - That has to change for Toney to become a factor and a steady contributor that Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka can rely on.

Retired Giants legend Eli Manning cheering on Saint Peter's / During his time with the New York Giants and beyond, Eli Manning has always been a staple in the community in the state of New Jersey. Particularly during his post-playing career and since joining twitter, Manning has been active in sharing his sports takes even beyond football. - At this time of year, while the NFL gears up for April’s draft, most people are locked into the NCAA tournament, most notably known as March Madness. - Manning is no exception as he is also paying close attention. - This year, while many were excited for the local Rutgers University to possibly make a little noise going into the tournament, the “Cinderella story” has been Saint Peter’s University. - Saint Peter’s is a 15th seed from Jersey City, New Jersey that has the local fans excited going into the Sweet 16 matchup against Purdue, a No. 3 seed. - Manning has made it clear he is cheering on the local team. - - What? Giants attend Penn State, Memphis pro days / - - - Penn State held their pro day on Thursday. As usual, the college football powerhouse drew interest from most NFL teams. New York Giants defensive back coach Jerome Henderson was in attendance. - - Giants' Jerome Henderson in Happy Valley to check out, among others, safety prospect Jaquan Brisker. https://t.co/BBvYlalxT0 - — Art Stapleton (@art_stapleton) March 24, 2022 - - - Jaquan Brisker was certainly at the top the list of attractions. He is one of the highest-rated safeties in this draft class and the Giants are looking for a new partner for Xavier McKinney and Julian Love after releasing veteran Logan Ryan and shying away from re-signing the injured Jabrill Peppers. - Mike Kaye of Pro Football Network wrote this about Brisker’s performance on Thursday: - Brisker is listed at 6-foot-1 and 206 pounds, looked fast and fluid in front of two NFC East coordinators (Dallas’ Dan Quinn and Jonathan Gannon of Philadelphia) on Thursday. - As Quinn and Gannon watched drills, Brisker showed off his unique blend of size, speed, and ball skills. He caught everything thrown his way and showed smooth change-of-direction ability in position drills. - Brisker said teams have asked him about playing all six defensive back positions, and his fluidity at the pro day should give those teams reason to believe he can. - PFN has Brisker ranked 56th overall on their board and project him to be a second round pick. The Giants have the 36th overall selection in the draft. - Other players who impressed were wide receiver Jahan Dotson and linebacker Brandon Smith. Cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields could also be on the Giants’ radar, as could offensive tackle Rasheed Walker, who once again did not work out. - Other players of interest were linebacker Jesse Luketa and edge rusher Arnold Ebiketie. The Giants aren’t likely to use any of their first round picks on the players Henderson scouted today, but Day 2 is a different story. - Meanwhile, in addition to Penn State, the Giants also had scouts at the Memphis pro day, where they rubbed elbows with Joe Judge. - - All 32 NFL clubs were in attendance today at Memphis pro-day for @seniorbowl standouts C/G Dylan Parham and WR Calvin Austin. 2022 NFL draft: Giants met with Ahmad 'Sauce' Gardner / - - - As the 2022 NFL draft
2022 NFL draft: Giants met with Ahmad 'Sauce' Gardner / - - - As the 2022 NFL draft approaches, the New York Giants head into their most crucial stretch in recent years. - As they had in 2019 (due to the Odell Beckham Jr. trade), the Giants own two first-round picks in April’s draft and this time both come within the top-10. - One of the lingering questions about the Giants’ roster is what they are going to do with cornerback James Bradberry. In a cap-driven decision, the team has been trying to find a trade partner for the former Pro Bowler and now seem to be willing to eat money in order to move him. - As general manager Joe Schoen continues to rework the Giants’ roster, Big Blue still has plenty of holes to fill, so the route they ultimately decided take remains undetermined. While many believe they will go offensive line with both picks early on, fewer and fewer mocks have the Giants going offensive line with both picks. - That probability will likely drop even further if the Giants are able to trade Bradberry, leaving them a void at cornerback. - Enter Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner, who the Giants visited with earlier this week. - - Clearly, @JeffRubys was the place to be in Cincy last night. Expected first-round CB Sauce Gardner went there last night: w/ the #Saints for appetizers and the #Giants for the main course. - — Aditi Kinkhabwala (@AKinkhabwala) March 24, 2022 - - - - Gardner, a junior out of Cincinnati, has been highly touted entering the draft and with the wide receiver talent in the NFC East, the cornerback position becomes even more important. Schoen also attended the Cincinnati pro day for what that’s worth, and the Giants have been connected to Gardner in recent mocks. - It’s pretty widely known that the Giants have plenty of needs on the roster, so it stands to reason Gardner may be among their potential targets. - - A NFL source told me recently that #Giants and Sauce Gardner is there most logical of all the possible top 10 team and top 10 player marriages https://t.co/ySJsFGWOma - — Ryan Dunleavy (@rydunleavy) March 24, 2022 - - - The Giants have also been rumored to have interest in moving back if the opportunity were to present itself in order to stock-pile draft capital in next year’s draft. It is possible the Giants are just doing their due diligence depending on the trade back possibilities. - As the draft inches closer and closer, it will be interesting to see if there are more ties connecting the Giants to Gardner. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts

Report: 'Financial complications' may lead Giants to draft day trade / - - - The New York Giants
Report: 'Financial complications' may lead Giants to draft day trade / - - - The New York Giants are looking to trade some of their 2022 NFL draft capital — specifically, one of their two first round picks — for 2023 NFL draft capital. - That was the report by Peter King of Football Morning in America on Monday. - The Giants, picking fifth and seventh overall, are likely to look to move one of them to try for multiple first-rounders next year. - Ralph Vacchiano of SNY confirmed that report on Thursday, noting that the Giants are specifically seeking a package that includes, but is not necessarily limited to, a 2023 first round pick. - According to multiple NFL sources, the Giants have signaled they are open to trading either the 5th or 7th overall pick in this years draft for a package that includes a first-rounder in 2023. And the more teams that are seeking quarterbacks, the more likely it is that they can. - As it turns out however, that may not be the only reason the Giants and general manager Joe Schoen look to trade down in the first round or out of it all together. - Currently, the Giants have only $3.1 million in salary cap space and will need upwards of $12.5 million to spend on their 2022 NFL draft class — assuming they use all nine picks. And given the rates of pay for the fifth and seventh overall selections (specific to position), New York may not be able to afford those picks. - As for the Giants, there are multiple reasons why they’re interested in trading down, according to sources, one being financial complications. They have nine picks in this year’s draft, which will cost them about $12.5 million in salary cap space, according to OverTheCap.com. - That’s a problem considering they are currently only about $3 million under the $208.2 million cap, according to NFL Players Association records. Even if they eventually trade cornerback James Bradberry, that would only clear another $12.1 million off the books – less if they have to pay some of his salary to make a deal. - Trading the 7th overall pick to a quarterback-needy team like the Saints and dropping to 18, for example, would save almost $2.2 million in cap space. They’d clear more than $5 million if they traded away that pick and didn’t get a first-round pick this year in return – which is something one source said the Giants might be willing to do. - The Giants being forced to move out of a prime draft slot because of financial issues would be the fitting final “gift” from the Dave Gettleman era. What an absolutely disastrous scenario. - On the bright side, it may all work out in Schoen’s favor. The Giants do not seem keen on drafting a quarterback this year and the 2023 draft class promises to be deeper. If they can trade one of their two

Logan Ryan says divorce from Giants wasn't his decision / The New York Giants were forced to absorb a significant dead cap hit earlier this month following the surprising release of safety Logan Ryan. - The decision to move on from Ryan, a team captain whose release provided almost no cap relief, was a curious one. It not only created an additional void at safety, but removed a positive voice from the locker-room. - On Thursday, while being introduced as the newest member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Ryan admitted the release caught him off guard and that it wasn’t his decision. - “Yeah, it wasn’t my call,” Ryan told reporters. “It was the direction (the Giants) wanted to go.” - And that was it. Ryan offered no further insight into the team’s decision, if there had been a requested pay cut or if it was a straight, no-frills divorce. - Whatever the case may be, Ryan is thrilled to reunite with Tom Brady in Tampa Bay. - “I’m really excited about being on the Bucs,” Ryan said. “We talk about Tom (Brady) and a lot about this and some of the roster, but also the building. There’s just a great building here, talking to (coach Bruce Arians) about what he believes in his players and his players policing the locker room, how he respects and believes in his veterans, values his veterans, that just felt so great. - “There’s a lot of reasons that things are moving in a great direction here and it has a lot to do with the people in this building.” - The Giants and Buccaneers do not play in 2022, so there will be no grudge match for Ryan to circle on his calendar. But that probably won’t sour him given that Tampa Bay is among the early Super Bowl favorites.

Giants' Joe Schoen attends Cincinnati pro day / - - - It’s that time of year when colleges and universities around the country hold a pro day for NFL teams to check out their players. - Some teams send position coaches, some send scouts or coordinators. Last season, Cincinnati boasted a 13-0 record and earned a playoff spot for the first time in school history. Though they lost to Alabama in the semi’s, there are several players who ended up on the radar of NFL personnel across the country. - The Giants have many needs to fill on their roster, on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Desmond Ridder is at the top of everyone’s list, but probably unlikely to end up in New York. Other players in attendance were cornerbacks Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner and Coby Bryant, safety Bryan Cook, linebacker Darrian Beavers, defensive end Myjai Sanders, running back Jerome Ford and wide receiver Alec Pierce. - The Giants could use any and all of those players, but Gardner may be the most intriguing potential fit in East Rutherford (especially if James Bradberry is traded). - There’s still a lot of work to be done before the 2022 NFL draft, and the Giants have a lot of holes to fill. The biggest question they face is who will be available to them when the time comes. - - List - - 2022 Giants free agency: Contract details for new players - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.

Report: Giants willing to eat salary to trade James Bradberry / - - - The New York Giants are desperate to clear salary cap space by trading cornerback James Bradberry. They are also desperate to get something in return for the veteran, which is why they do not plan to release him. - But things are becoming dire for the Giants. The 2022 NFL draft is just around the corner and the market has not materialized in the way New York had hoped. - As a result, the Giants and general manager Joe Schoen have apparently reevaluated their strategy with Bradberry. And while they are still reluctant to release him, they are now willing to eat some of cornerback’s salary in order to trade him. - From Jordan Raanan of ESPN: - Top cornerback James Bradberry is a candidate to be traded because of an untenable $21.9 million cap hit. Another quality player soon to be gone. The Giants are so desperate to get something in return for the Pro Bowl cornerback they are willing to eat some of his $13.5 million salary in a trade, a league source told ESPN. - How much of Bradberry’s $13.4 million salary the Giants would be willing to eat is unclear, but it may be necessary in order to rekindle his market a bit. - The team would eat $11.28 million in dead space if Bradberry were designated a pre-June 1 release and get nothing in return, so there’s at least some financial wiggle room here if it means receiving a draft pick in return.

Loss of Evan Engram continues disturbing first-round Giants trend / As the league’s legal tampering period opened last week, New York Giants tight end Evan Engram was one of the more highly coveted free agents heading into the open tight end market. - Engram, of course, ended up signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars on a one-year deal, $9 million deal. - Engram’s departure puts the tight end in all too familiar territory for Giants first-round draft picks. Engram, like so many of the team’s recent Round 1 draft picks, will depart without getting a lucrative deal from Big Blue. - - Evan Engram's departure makes it 11 straight Giants first-round picks who didn't get or play a long-term second contract with the team. ELEVEN! Last one to do so was Kiwanuka (JPP pieced together a few short term deals and Odell was signed then traded). That's a loooong stretch. - — Tom Rock (@TomRock_Newsday) March 15, 2022 - - - Though there are a few outliers, as Tom Rock notes, most players never even had the opportunity for a short-term contract after their rookie deal expired. Engram is the latest. - - Those 1st round picks: - Aaron RossKenny PhillipsHakeem NicksJPPPrince AmukamaraDavid WilsonJustin PughOdell Beckham Jr.Ereck FlowersEli AppleEvan Engram - — Tom Rock (@TomRock_Newsday) March 15, 2022 - - - Aaron Ross, Hakeem Nicks, Kenny Phillips, Jason Pierre-Paul and Prince Amukamara all contributed to least one of the Giants’ recent Super Bowls. But, for the most part, their prime years were short-lived as the team moved on at the right time. - The sole exception is JPP, who is still playing at a high level but never got a lucrative long-term deal from the Giants before being traded. - David Wilson and Ereck Flowers were unlucky picks by the Giants as Wilson’s career ended early due to injury and Flowers was one of the biggest busts in franchise history. However, Flowers did go on to be a formidable option for other teams following his time with Big Blue. - The departures of Odell Beckham Jr. and Eli Apple were the most drama-filled on the list. And while Beckham still has some love for Big Blue, Apple can’t decide which one of his former team’s fan bases he hates more. - Of course, the Giants’ next shot at breaking the streak will be Saquon Barkley. After his rookie year it seemed as though he would be a Giant for life, but after the last few years of injury-filled football, Barkley may not be a Giant much longer — many speculate that he might currently be on the trading block. - After that it will be Daniel Jones and Dexter Lawrence from the 2019 NFL draft class — a class where the Giants already have a failed with one of their first-round picks (Deandre Baker). - Current general manager Joe Schoen obviously hopes to buck this trend. - - List - - 2022 Giants

2022 NFL draft: Giants keyed in on tight end prospects / The New York Giants are in the market for both depth and talent at the tight end position this offseason after losing Evan Engram to free agency and Kaden Smith to a failed physical. - The Giants recently signed journeyman Ricky Seals-Jones to a roster that had just Chris Myarick, Rysen John and Jake Hausmann listed at tight end. But more is needed. The Giants are likely to select another tight end in next month’s draft and have been making the rounds at the NFL Combine and the college pro days. - - The #Giants are working pre-draft circuit doing diligence on TEs, which they’ll likely target early this year. - Watched Charlie Kolar (Iowa State) at his Pro Day. Had formal meeting with Jelani Woods. Met with some at the combine (incl. Trey McBride, Greg Dulcich, Jeremy Ruckert) - — Zack Rosenblatt (@ZackBlatt) March 23, 2022 - - - It’s unlikely a tight end will go in the first round this year but there are several that will get Day 2 consideration. Colorado State’s Trey McBride is one. Jalen Wydermyer of Texas A&M and UCLA’s Greg Dulcich are two other names. Virginia’s Jelani Woods had a great combine but there are a half-dozen or so others that teams will be high on him, so of the Giants like one they might have to dive in in the middle rounds. - Some names to watch: Cade Otton of Washington, Iowa State’s Charlie Kolar, Isaiah Likely of Coastal Carolina, Wisconsin’s Jake Ferguson, Daniel Bellinger of San Diego State and Chig Okonkwo of Maryland.

Report: Giants agree to terms with DT Justin Ellis / The New York Giants have agreed to terms with former Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Justin Ellis, reports NFL Network’s Ian Rappaport. - - The #Giants are signing former #Ravens DT Justin Ellis, source said, giving him a 1-year deal. More familiarity for DC Wink Martindale, who had him in Baltimore. - — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 23, 2022 - - - Selected by the then-Oakland Raiders in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL draft, the eight-year veteran is a low-cost option that adds depth to the defensive line. - Ellis has 148 tackles over his career, 83 of which were solo. He also comes in knowing the defensive scheme, having played under current Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale during his time in Baltimore. - Ellis also helps replace the departure of Austin Johnson, who the Giants lost in free agency. That said, Ellis’ 2021 PFF grade was a paltry 49.2. Still, he’s played in 100 NFL games with 50 starts, and has appeared in three postseason games. Joining the Giants would also reunite Ellis with outside linebacker Jihad Ward, both of whom played in Baltimore. - At 6-foot-2 and 350 pounds, Ellis is a force to be reckoned with. He’s reached the quarterback four times in his career and six of his tackles are for a loss. He adds size, depth and experience to the defense, and will likely be instrumental in implementing Martindale’s defense. - The final step in this process is for Ellis to pass a physical, and when he does that, he’ll suit up in blue.

2022 Giants free agency: Contract details for new players / The New York Giants and general manager Joe Schoen entered the new league year and free agency with very little money to spend. The idea was to clear upwards of $40 million in salary cap space while hunting for bargains on the open market. - Through a week and a half, the Giants have fared relatively well. They’ve been unable to trade either cornerback James Bradberry or running back Saquon Barkley, but they’ve found other ways to clear room. - New York has also added a number of new contracts, including multiple offensive linemen. But only one of them was a big-ish money signing. - Here’s a quick look at the basic contracts for all new signees, as well as some information on restructures and pay cuts. - Note: New details will be added as they become available.

Giants stand to gain from Lorenzo Carter loss / - - - The New York Giants were in the mix to re-sign free agent linebacker Lorenzo Carter last week but were simply outbid by the Atlanta Falcons. - Carter was a starter and rated as a player in the compensatory mix for the Giants for next season. Where the Giants stand right now is still fluid, but the Carter loss should work in their favor, reports Zack Rosenblatt of NJ Advance Media. - The Giants supposedly were pushing to bring back Carter but presumably weren’t willing to go too far above the minimum. The Falcons have caught flak for signing Carter to a compensatory-eligible deal, thus cancelling out a fourth-round comp pick they would get for losing linebacker Foyesade Oluokun. But the Giants certainly aren’t mad about that decision: OTC estimates Carter’s deal valued as a seventh-round comp pick. - Before free agency, the Giants had several free agents that — if signed away — could factor into the formula that would gain them consideration in the compensatory draft pool next year. - Over the Cap rated their potential to cash in as low in a recent assessment of next year’s comp picks: - The new front office in New York has been aggressively cutting salary in more than just an effort to get cap compliant. This would indicate that may be interested in making several top moves in free agency to churn the roster to their liking. They have a few players (Will Hernandez, Evan Engram, Jabrill Peppers) that might get good deals elsewhere, but those CFA losses could be offset by CFA signings on the Giants’ end. Potential: Low - Over the Cap’s comp pick cancellation chart is currently rating the Carter signing as adding any picks for the Giants next year. - Currently, they are projected to get a 5th rounder for Engram (who was signed by Jacksonville and a 7th for Keion Crossen, who was signed by Miami. - The losses of Carter and defensive lineman Austin Johnson are being offset by the Giants’ signings of offensive lineman Mark Glowinski and quarterback Tyrod Taylor. - The signings of running back Matt Breida and defensive end Jihad Ward are not eligible for compensation. - - List - - Giants assign numbers to newly signed free agents - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. -

Skip Bayless: Giants must trade for Baker Mayfield / - - - Baker Mayfield has now found himself essentially homeless in the NFL as the Cleveland Browns have traded for Deshaun Watson. And now Skip Bayless of FS1 thinks that the New York Giants should help Baker find a new home. - Mayfield has been an average quarterback since entering the league, highlighted by his record rookie season. He has totaled 14,125 passing yards and 92 touchdowns in his four years with the Browns. - However, when it comes to winning, Mayfield has struggled. He has a 29-30 record as an NFL quarterback and has underwhelmed with a very talented roster. This is why the Browns went out and got Watson — a very talented quarterback with an awful roster. - The Giants have had faulty quarterback play for the past few seasons and due to this Bayless thinks that the Giants should pursue Mayfield. He believe that Mayfield could “light up New York City” and in turn, he can right the ship of the failing Giants organization. - - Skip Bayless advocates for the Giants to trade for Baker Mayfield, because he would “light up” New York City. pic.twitter.com/QIWCa95jAn - — Doug Rush (@TheDougRush) March 22, 2022 - - - Mayfield and Daniel Jones have a troubled past, and a trade for Baker would only heighten that. They have supposedly buried the hatchet from the mild dispute, but Baker had some questionable comments about Jones getting drafted. - “I cannot believe the Giants took Daniel Jones,” Mayfield said at the time, according to GQ. “Blows my mind. … Some people overthink it. That’s where people go wrong. They forget you’ve gotta win. - “Either you have a history of winning and being that guy for your team or you don’t.” - Both quarterbacks have not really panned out and it looks like both of their franchises will be moving on from their respective quarterbacks barring a breakout season from Jones in 2022. - Will Giants acquire Baker Mayfield? - Powered By PickUp - - List - - Giants assign numbers to newly signed free agents - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in

Giants showing notable interest in Mississippi State OT Charles Cross / - - - It’s no secret the New York Giants are in the market for a new starting right tackle, and the search to find one is likely to conclude at the 2022 NFL draft. - With two first-round picks, many anticipate the Giants will use one of those on a Day 1 starter that bookends Andrew Thomas. However, who that might be is open for debate. - For months, many believed Alabama’s Evan Neal would go No. 1 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Then that switched to NC State’s Ikem Ekwonu, but even that’s uncertain. - It’s entirely possible the Giants are able to pick between one of the two. It’s also entirely possible that their sights are set on a different right tackle. Say, Charles Cross of Mississippi State. - Cross participated in drills and testing at the Mississippi State Pro Day on Tuesday and the Giants were on hand to watch. They were represented by offensive line coach Bobby Johnson and others. - And to say the Giants have expressed significant interest in Cross would be an understatement. - - The New York Giants' interest in #MississippiState LT Charles Cross is very, very real. - The Giants' staff members in attendance were OC Mike Kafka, OL coach Bobby Johnson and assistant OL coach Tony Sparano Jr. - NYG has picks 5 and 7 in the NFL Draft.https://t.co/K6MYqVuhTT - — Jon Sokoloff (@JonSokoloff) March 22, 2022 - - - - Multiple New York Giants scouts praised Charles Cross after his Pro Day concluded. - — Jon Sokoloff (@JonSokoloff) March 22, 2022 - - - - Charles Cross said that he’s heard from all of the NFL teams but is hearing most from the Jets and Giants. pic.twitter.com/e8bvSqTOaD - — Robbie Faulk (@robbiefaulk247) March 22, 2022 - - - Cross has been mocked to the Giants numerous times, but that’s usually as a result of Neal and Ekwonu having been selected over the top four picks. He’s been viewed as sort of 1c to Neal’s 1a and Ekwonu’s 1b. - But perhaps the Giants and general manager Joe Schoen see it differently. Maybe they view Cross as 1a or just as the more ideal fit for their scheme. Or maybe they’re just going heavy in scouting all three of the potential right tackles and Cross just happened to be the man at the plate on Tuesday.

Giants on hand to watch Malik Willis at Liberty Pro Day / The New York Giants quarterback coach Shea Tierney
Giants on hand to watch Malik Willis at Liberty Pro Day / The New York Giants quarterback coach Shea Tierney has been busy as of recently. After just attending the Pittsburgh Pro Day to scout Kenny Pickett, the Giants sent Tierney to Liberty to watch potential top-10 pick, quarterback Malik Willis. - - Hearing Giants QB coach Shea Tierney has made the trek to Liberty Pro Day, where Malik Willis is the featured prospect. - Tierney was in Pittsburgh watching Kenny Pickett yesterday. - More evaluation for NYG, who are likely more invested in who wants to move up for QB in Top 10. - — Art Stapleton (@art_stapleton) March 22, 2022 - - - Willis has been an outstanding quarterback during his time as a Liberty Flame, throwing for over 5,000 yards and 45 touchdowns during his two years as a starter. Willis was also a true dual-threat, rushing for 1,822 yards and 17 touchdowns during his 23 starts. - Willis’ amazing play since transferring from Auburn has made him a top prospect in this new age of dual-threat quarterbacks. He also had a phenomenal combine where he threw some amazing deep balls helping his overall draft stock. Willis currently has worked his way up to the top 10 discussion and he may possibly even be a top-five pick in this year’s draft. - However, despite this recent quarterback scouting, it remains unlikely the Giants will select a quarterback with either of their two top 10 picks. They have too many needs and there has been a general commitment to Daniel Jones for this upcoming season. - However, if the Giants were to target a quarterback they have plenty of capital to trade back to a desirable spot to draft any of this year’s top field generals. - - If the Giants aren't sold on drafting Kenny Pickett or Malik Willis for themselves, which I don't believe they are, the consecutive Pro Days for Pickett and Willis have seemed to juice the trade-back market up a bit. - That's good for business if you're Joe Schoen. - — Art Stapleton (@art_stapleton) March 22, 2022 - - - In addition to the Liberty Pro Day, the Giants also had representatives on hand at the Iowa State Pro Day. - - One guy NFL scouts are higher on than media is Iowa State’s Charlie Kolar. TE coaches from Falcons, Eagles, Giants, Saints, Cards, and Titans were at @CycloneFB pro-day today. Looked noticeably different this year from junior tape in terms of bend & fluidity. Nice look here: pic.twitter.com/5dkKX7S2Xb - — Jim Nagy (@JimNagy_SB) March 22, 2022 - - - It does not hurt to be prepared, and general manager Joe Schoen making sure he does his research on all the potential quarterback options is a good look for this new era of management in Giants football. - Regardless of what Schoen and the Giants decide, they will need to make the

Giants land two studs in latest Mel Kiper Jr. mock draft / The New York Giants hold the fifth and seventh overall selections in the 2022 NFL draft and have a chance to lay some serious groundwork on their roster rebuilding effort. - On Tuesday, ESPN’s original draftnik, Mel Kiper Jr., provided his most recent take on how the Giants can do that in next month’s draft. - Round 1, Pick 5: Evan Neal, offensive tackle, Alabama - The Giants, the other team with two top-10 picks [Kiper is referring to the New York Jets here], haven’t been as active in free agency as new general manager Joe Schoen gets the team back into decent salary-cap shape. That doesn’t mean they don’t have needs, though, particularly at edge rusher and offensive tackle. With the way the board has fallen in this projection, they can get Day 1 starters at both spots. - Neal is a massive tackle who can overpower defenders in the run game and move his feet as a pass-protector. Andrew Thomas, the No. 4 pick in the 2020 draft, looked much better in Year 2 and could stay at left tackle, pushing Neal to the right side. Neal also played some guard at Alabama, and he could be great there too. This is a big season for quarterback Daniel Jones, so the Giants have to keep him upright. - A no-brainer. The Giants’ offensive line has been the poster child of all of their failures the past decade and Neal should be at the top of their wish list. If he falls to them at No. 5, they should thank the football gods and race up the podium with the card. - Not only can Neal cone right in and start, he just might displace Andrew Thomas at left tackle, which would move Thomas to the right side, making the line better in both spots. - Round 1, Pick 7: Kayvon Tibodeaux, EDGE, Oregon (via Chicago Bears) - This pick is logical for the team and for the prospect. The Giants’ top pass-rusher last season was rookie Azeez Ojulari, who led the team with eight sacks, and they have to improve on the edge. This is their best chance to add a young, talented defensive end. They can afford to use this pick on Thibodeaux, who has a high ceiling but was inconsistent in 2021. - If Thibodeaux puts it all together, you’re talking about All-Pro-level talent. But if he doesn’t build out secondary moves and can’t improve his all-around game, he could struggle. He has the type of physical traits NFL teams love, but taking that guy in the top 10 is risky. If New York passes on Thibodeaux, keep an eye on cornerback or linebacker with this pick. - It’s unlikely Thibodeaux falls down to No. 7. If I’m the Giants, I consider that a gift as he is a boom-or-bust prospect and it takes the decisions out of their hands. - Thibodeaux may or

Giants looking to turn 2022 draft capital into 2023 draft capital? / Last year, when the New York Giants traded back in the 2021 NFL draft, the move gave Big Blue some extra draft capital. Most notably, they acquired a 2022 first-round pick from the Chicago Bears, who ended up selecting quarterback Justin Fields in the Giants’ original spot. - Going into the 2021 season, neither the Bears nor the Giants had high expectations. Many believed they would be among the NFL’s worst teams, leaving New York with two top-10 picks. - That turned out to be the case. - Now, with the Giants selecting fifth and seventh overall with a new regime in place, their April decisions may be the most crucial in recent memory. But what if they don’t make both picks? - Peter King of Football Morning in America thinks the Giants may be looking at a trade to acquire additional capital for the 2023 NFL draft — one that promises a deep pool of prospects at potential positions of need. - The Giants, picking fifth and seventh overall, are likely to look to move one of them to try for multiple first-rounders next year. - With the roster far from ready to compete, acquiring future draft capital may be in New York’s best interest. This may also be a reason for the Giants have been rumored to have James Bradberry and Saquon Barkley on the trading block. - While the Giants may benefit from the idea of trading back for future draft capital, the way this offseason has shaped up has two teams picking ahead of them all the sudden in the market for a quarterback. - - Big winner from the Matt Ryan trade is the Giants. The Panthers and Falcons are obvious landing spots for a rookie QB. Some team may want to trade up to #5 overall to get their QB1. NYG could likely still get the player they want at #7. - — Jordan Reid (@Jordan_Reid) March 21, 2022 - - - If greater talent drops to the Giants due to quarterbacks unexpectedly going ahead of their picks, it may be more difficult to part ways with either of those picks. - With so many needs on the Giants’ roster, certainly they can use two promising players taken at the five and seven spots. However, there might be value in trading back to acquire more draft capital in the 2023 draft where the Giants will hopefully be closer to competing. - NFL Draft: What will NYG do with first 2 picks? - Powered By PickUp - - List - - Giants assign numbers to newly signed free agents - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up -

See it: New Giants DE Jihad Ward shook ref's hand after personal foul / One of the newest members of the New York Giants, defensive end Jihad Ward, went viral last season as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars. - During a game against the New England Patriots, Ward was called for a personal foul. Jihad Ward intends to bring his aggression to Giants' defense / - - - The New York Giants added a little depth to their defensive line on Monday, signing former second-round pick Jihad Ward. - Ward is a bit of a journeyman, having played for five different organizations prior to joining. One of those stops came in Baltimore where he played under current Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. - “Wink is one of those coaches where basically he’s going to make me extend my career being the best that I can be. Wink is one of the coaches that did a hell of a job with me when I was a Raven so I’m here now and ready to win some games,” Ward told reporters. - Martindale is known as an aggressive, blitz-often play-caller and that fits Ward’s style of play. - “Just coming in with that aggression. Basically, just strong and really the aggression is just some blitzes and stuff. You don’t know when we’re going to come. That’s his type of style. That’s his type of deal. We’re going to come at you,” Ward said of his style of play and Martindale’s system. - But even beyond his aggression, Ward is bringing a high level of football intelligence into the fold. His goal is to make the Giants’ defensive line as savvy as it is dominant. - “I can bring a lot to the team. Basically, the most important thing I can bring to the table is bringing just trying to win games, dominating the edge and then dominating the d-line,” Ward said. “I believe that I can be one of the best and one of the top-tier d-lineman (on the) Giants. So, when you play the Giants, the d-line is going to be one that’s mentioned. So that’s what I can bring to the table. - “I can play all the positions. Everything is really simple. The only thing is with the rest of the d-line that’s here, we’ve just got to basically understand its different types of fronts. When we play a different type of team, we might go straight to base on this one, like a basic front and certain teams, it’s quite difficult for us and we’ll change the scheme up based on whatever the personnel is. It’s basically like a mixture of everything.” - - List - - Giants assign numbers to newly signed free agents - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error

It was a 'no brainer' for Jamil Douglas to sign with Giants / - - - The New York Giants added another offensive lineman to their roster with the signing of offensive guard Jamil Douglas, which was made official on Monday. - Douglas projects to be a strong depth piece for the Giants as he enters his eighth season in the NFL. He, recently being in Buffalo during the 2021 season, will rejoin Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll as new members of the Giants. - Due to this connection with the general manager and head coach, Douglas joining Big Blue seemed like a perfect fit. - “Really, this is the best opportunity for myself and my family. I want to be a part of an organization that has a lot of pride and I know with this coaching staff they are looking to bring it to that point,” Douglas told reporters. “So, when an opportunity presented itself, for me, it was really a no brainer just looking at the guys that are in this building and the goals they are trying to accomplish.” - Douglas is now another member of this great migration of players from the Buffalo Bills to join the Giants. The Giants have signed his former teammates Jon Feliciano and Matt Breida, both whom he has a connection with as the former was a fellow member of the Bills’ offensive line and the latter is a running back he blocked for. - However, for Douglas, a big factor was the migration of offensive line coach Bobby Johnson from Buffalo to East Rutherford. - “Coach Johnson is a great coach, man. I’ve been fortunate enough over my career to have some really good o-line coaches, really good coaches in general, but the thing about him is he’s going to instill confidence in his guys and he’s also going to coach you hard. That’s all you can ask for, really, as a player is to be coached hard. That’s how you get better,” Douglas said. - New York will need Johnson to transfer his success with the Bills to the Giants as their offensive line has been the worst part of the roster for some time now. There has been an inability to get a push in the run game or protect the quarterback, resulting in the Giants rarely scoring touchdowns in 2021. - - List - - Giants assign numbers to newly signed free agents - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - -

Matt Breida wants to help Brian Daboll bring a 'winning culture' to Giants / - - - The New York Giants signed sixth-year running back Matt Breida to potentially backup Saquon Barkley on Monday. - Breida has had a modest start to his NFL career, totaling 3,010 scrimmage yards and 13 touchdowns in five seasons. His play and his outstanding yards per attempt (4.9 yards) have made him one of the best change of pace backs in the NFL. - Despite his impressive efficiency, Breida will now be joining the fourth team of his NFL career after spending three years in San Francisco, one in Miami, and most recently one in Buffalo. There he played under current Giants head coach Brian Daboll which played a big part in him bringing his talents to East Rutherford. - “Nothing but great things about this organization I’ve heard about,” Breida told reporters. “Obviously offensive coordinator and now he’s a head coach Brian Daboll, he’s a great guy, great person and he’s a great coach, so that was big in the decision in why I chose to come here. Second of all, yeah, something was already in the works before. Like I said, I already had my mind made up before this, so I knew I was going to go.” - Daboll helped the Buffalo Bills and Breida have the third-best offense in terms of points per game last season. When you score you win, two things the Giants did not do last season with the second-lowest scoring offense in the NFL. - Breida wants to help Daboll import the “winning culture” the Bills and help the Giants “add on to that and build what’s already been here.” - It’s no secret that the Giants have been one of the worst teams in the NFL over the past five seasons. A change is needed and Daboll and Breida both have a lot of experience in winning football games. Hopefully for the Giants, they can help the team return to the great organization it once was. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.

Giants were on hand to watch Kenny Pickett at Pittsburgh's Pro Day / - - - Kenny Pickett has become one of the premier quarterback prospects in the 2022 NFL draft due to his breakout season in 2021. - Pickett, a five-year quarterback for the Pittsburgh Panthers, had a lackluster start to his collegiate career as he threw only 39 touchdowns in his first four seasons. However, in his redshirt-senior season, Pickett erupted onto the scene throwing for 42 touchdowns (more than the previous four years combined) and 4,219 yards. - Additionally, Pickett also showcased his dual-threat capabilities as he rushed for 233 yards and five touchdowns. - This stellar play earned Pickett ACC Player of the Year and All-American First Team recognition. It has also made him a top-three quarterback prospect in this year’s draft. - At a time when many teams are desperate for a new franchise quarterback, this puts Pickett in a position to likely be an early first-round pick. - As for the New York Giants, they do not currently appear to be looking for the new face of the franchise in this year’s draft (with the singing of Tyrod Taylor and the verbal commitment to Daniel Jones) but you can never be too careful when scouting quarterbacks. - For that reason, the Giants, along with eight other organizations, were in attendance for Pittsburgh’s Pro Day on Monday to see Pickett. - - Nine QB coaches have RSVPed to the @Pitt_FB Pro Day, where @MoveTheSticks’ top QB Kenny Pickett will be throwing: #Falcons, #Panthers, #Lions, #Saints, #Giants, #Eagles, #Seahawks, #Titans, #Commanders. Full coverage coming on @nflnetwork! - — Aditi Kinkhabwala (@AKinkhabwala) March 21, 2022 - - - Although the Giants were represented with a body or two, other teams appeared to send their entire contingent to the Pro Day.

Giants go all defense in latest USA TODAY mock draft / - - - The New York Giants
Giants go all defense in latest USA TODAY mock draft / - - - The New York Giants have spent the first wave of free agency heavily focused on the offensive side of the ball. They’ve added several offensive linemen, wide receivers and even a tight end. - The question is, has that approach opened up options in the 2022 NFL draft? Does it mean they will go heavy on defense over the first few rounds? - Nate Davis of USA TODAY certainly thinks so. In his latest mock draft, he has the Giants outright ignoring their offensive line in favor of beefing up their secondary. - Up first at No. 5 overall is Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton. - 5. New York Giants – S Kyle Hamilton, Notre Dame: He’s 6-4 and 220 pounds with sub-4.6 speed and can shore up deficiencies at the second and/or third levels. Hamilton can provide coverage, a box presence, blitzing ability and an intimidation factor. And with veteran Logan Ryan’s release opening a job on the back end, sure seems like pairing Hamilton with improving Xavier McKinney would give Big Blue a heckuva safety tandem. - After releasing veteran safety Logan Ryan, the selection of Hamilton makes much more sense than it had previously. The Giants now have a need at the position and Hamilton has as much upside as anyone else in the draft. - Two picks later, the Giants forego adding a talented edge rusher in favor of another body in the secondary. This time, Cincinnati cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner. - 7. Giants (from Chicago Bears) – CB Ahmad ‘Sauce’ Gardner, Cincinnati: Totally feasible that New York could take a pair of defensive backs in a three-pick span, this one obtained in last year’s draft day deal involving QB Justin Fields. Gardner would be a safe plug-and-play selection, the consensus All-American allowing only 20 receptions in 2021, picking off three passes and – evidence of his all-around game – posting 40 tackles and three sacks. And talk about shutdown – he never allowed a TD pass while with the Bearcats. His 6-3, 190-pound build is another selling point to a league that likes big corners. Adding Gardner might also trigger a deal of veteran CB James Bradberry and bring more needed draft ammo back to the Giants. - The selection of Gardner only makes sense if the Giants are able to trade James Bradberry or are confident a post-draft trade will be agreed upon. They do not intend to release the veteran, so taking Gardner before Bradberry is dealt would be a risky move. - Still, Gardner has a high ceiling and a potentially bright future. He would come in and start on Day 1 (if Bradberry is traded), giving the Giants a top-end corner for the foreseeable future.

Ex-Giant Lorenzo Carter expected to sign with Falcons / - - - This past weekend, New York Giants free agent outside linebacker Lorenzo Carter said goodbye to the team and their fans on a social media post. - On Monday morning, we learned how and why the former third-round pick out of Georgia was saying goodbye. He’s apparently signed a one-year deal with his hometown team, the Atlanta Falcons. - - The #Giants made a push to bring him back but the #Falcons came with a strong offer over the weekend to close it out. https://t.co/Kfixdh1X1j - — Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) March 21, 2022 - - - Carter was considered a steal when the Giants selected him 66th overall in the 2018 NFL draft. He flashed at times but was overall a disappointment in four seasons in New York. He started just 14 games over first two seasons, amassing 8.5 sacks, and earned a starting position in 2020 but blew out his Achilles in Week 5. - Last season, Carter appeared to be on his way to another forgettable year until the final four games when he came alive with five sacks, four passes defensed and two forced fumbles. - The Giants are prepared to go in another direction at outside linebacker under new defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. Second-year players Azeez Ojulari, Quincy Roche and Elerson Smith will all get opportunities on the outside this summer at camp. - - RelatedGiants rework Graham Gano's contract, clear 2022 cap spaceReport: Giants 'love' Georgia RB James CookLorenzo Carter says goodbye, will not return to Giants - - List - - Giants assign numbers to newly signed free agents - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.

Giants rework Graham Gano's contract, clear 2022 cap space / - - - The ongoing effort to recapture as much salary cap space as possible for the New York Giants continued over the weekend when they restructured the contract of kicker Graham Gano. - - The Giants converted $2.63M of kicker Graham Gano’s salary into a bonus, creating $1.753M in cap space. A void year was also added to his contract. - GM Joe Schoen has said he preferred not to do this in ideal world, but it apparently was necessary with Giants tight vs cap. - — Jordan Raanan (@JordanRaanan) March 21, 2022 - - - In 2020, Gano signed a three-year, $14 million contract that included a $3.25 million signing bonus with $9.5 million guaranteed. Gano’s cap hit for for both 2022 and 2023 was $4,671,296. - The Giants are reportedly under the salary cap (Top 51) by less than $400,000 at the moment but are still carrying James Bradberry and Saquon Barkley’s contracts, two players the team hopes to trade. - Should the Giants manage to trade both, they could clear approximately $18 million in salary cap space, but by that time there may not be any big-ticket free agents left on the market to sign. - Gano, meanwhile, is one of the few Giants players to earn their keep in recent seasons. He made 29 of his 33 field goal attempts and all 17 of his point after attempts in 2021. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.

Report: Giants 'love' Georgia RB James Cook / - - - When the University of Georgia held their Pro Day on March 16, the New York Giants were well-represented. Among those in attendance was general manager Joe Schoen. - At the time, rumors had begun to swirl that the Giants had their eye on running back James Cook. They were intrigued by his skillset and wanted a closer look. - As it turns out, the Giants really liked what they saw. - Matt Lombardo of GMEN HQ reports that the Giants “love” Cook — from their scouts all the way of up to Schoen himself. - “The Giants love James Cook,” a league source tells FanSided. - Cook, 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, rushed for 728 yards and seven touchdowns, while averaging 6.4 yards per carry as a senior for the National Champion Bulldogs last season. - “The thing I like about him is he’s a solid change-of-pace guy,” an NFC Executive tells FanSided, on the condition of anonymity because he isn’t authorized to speak publicly on prospects. “He may not be a three-down back, but he runs hard and has a lot of talent.” - Although the Giants are open to trading Saquon Barkley, his market has not developed. If they can’t find a trade partner by late April and the early part of the 2022 NFL draft, he’s expected to remain in tow and start this coming season. - But that doesn’t mean the Giants won’t have to address the position. After releasing Devontae Booker earlier this year, there is most certainly a need to add depth. The team also needs to concern themselves with the future of the position as Barkley’s status beyond 2022 is very much up in the air. - Cook could quell some of those concerns for the Giants and even potentially play a significant role behind Barkley as a rookie. Early projections have him going anywhere from Round 3 to Round 5, so Schoen wouldn’t even need to burn any of his top draft capital in order to land him. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in

Lorenzo Carter says goodbye, will not return to Giants / - - - After finishing the 2021 regular season strong, there had been some speculation that linebacker Lorenzo Carter could return to the New York Giants. - However, we learned on Sunday that that’s not going to happen. - In a lengthy Instagram post, Carter thanked the Giants organization and their fans while also appearing to say goodbye. - - - - - - - - - - - - - View this post on Instagram - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A post shared by Lorenzo Carter (@_zocarter) - - - - - “It’s hard for me to even put in words how blessed I am to have been apart of the New York Football Giants family these past four years. Leaving home as a young man and coming to New York taught me so much about not just myself, but opened my eyes to the world as a whole and that’s something I will never forget,” Carter wrote” - “The people in the building that spent day and night making sure we had everything we needed, from the kitchen staff, to equipment, to the janitors, to the trainers, the list goes on and on, but I’m thankful for everyone that played their part in making my time with the organization so special. - “Thanks to everyone that’s invested in me as not just an athlete, but as a person as well. The connections and memories I made are something I will cherish forever and as I move on to my next chapter, I’ll never forget the Big Blue!” - A third-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Carter was expected to come in and transform into a game-changing edge rusher for the Giants. And at times, there were flashes that led many to believe the 26-year-old would become exactly that. However, injury and inconsistency ultimately stunted Carter’s growth in East Rutherford and a strong six-week stint to end last season wasn’t enough to earn him another opportunity. - In 49 career games with the Giants (33 starts), Carter recorded 153 tackles (94 solo, 21 for a loss), 35 QB hits, 14.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, 15 passes defensed and one interception. - - List - - Giants assign numbers to newly signed free agents - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - -

Giants pick Evan Neal, Derek Stingley Jr. in The Sporting News mock / NFL mock draft season is in full
Giants pick Evan Neal, Derek Stingley Jr. in The Sporting News mock / NFL mock draft season is in full swing, and now with all the trades and player movement, teams’ positioning and needs are changing. - The New York Giants have not been effected position-wise as they still hold the fifth and seventh overall selections in the first round. The teams around them however, may have changed their priorities. - In the latest mock draft from The Sporting News, the Giants stick to their guns and bring in a much needed offensive tackle and a cover cornerback. - 5. New York Giants (4-13): Evan Neal, OT, Alabama (6-7, 337 pounds) - The Giants have hacked away on their offensive line by getting new interior starting options in Matt Gono, Jon Feliciano and Mark Glowinski. They also parted ways with Nate Solder. They need a rock of an all-around tackle to complement the edge blocking of first-rounder Andrew Thomas. Neal fits the bill for former Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. - There’s no argument here. If Neal is somehow left on the board, the Giants should run to the podium with the card. He can play both tackle positions and is as a unique an athlete as you will find in any draft. - It’s not often the Giants can fall into a franchise player such as this, so Giant fans (and Daniel Jones) will be applauding this stroke of luck. - 7. New York Giants (from Chicago Bears): Derek Stingley Jr., CB, LSU (6-1, 195 pounds) - Stingley is in play for this pick with the rumors the Giants are trying to move James Bradberry and his big contract under new GM Joe Scoen. Stingley is a big and long dynamic cover man and elite on-ball playmaking skills in the Jalen Ramsey mold. - Good player and at a position of need if they do end up dealing James Bradberry, but Stingley might not be the pick here with Cincinnati’s Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner still available. - Overall, the Giants land two potential Pro Bowlers and upgrade their sagging roster after years of mixing and matching with free agents. - - List - - New York Giants' 2022 free agency scorecard - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now

Examining Giants' history of top-7 draft picks / The New York Giants hold the fifth and seventh overall selections in the 2022 NFL draft. It is the first time they’ve had two picks in the top-10 since the amateur draft began back in 1936. - Throughout their history, the Giants have had 21 picks in the top-7, 11 of which came after the 1970 NFL/AFL merger: - - No. 1: Kyle Rote (1951), Tucker Frederickson (1965) - No. 2: Skippy Minisi (1948), Lawrence Taylor (1981), Saquon Barkley (2018) - No. 3: John Hicks (1974), Carl Banks (1984) - No. 4: Ed Widseth (1937), Paul Page (1949), Philip Rivers (2004), Andrew Thomas (2020) - No. 5: George Connor (1946), Gary Jeter (1977), Cedric Jones (1996) - No. 6: George Franck (1941), Steve Filipowicz (1943), Billy Hillenbrand (1944), Daniel Jones (2019) - No. 7: Travis Tidwell (1950), Phil Simms (1979), Ike Hilliard (1997) - - Of these 21 players, only two went on to Hall of Fame careers. Taylor, of course, and Connor — but not as a Giant. In 1946, Connor decided to forego the NFL for Notre Dame. He eventually would end up with the Chicago Bears where he became an All-Pro tackle. - Rote played 11 seasons for the Giants, making the Pro Bowl four times and was a key contributor on their 1956 NFL Championship team. Frederickson was not so lucky. After a Pro Bowl rookie season, a knee injury would dog him for the remainder of his career, which ended in 1971. - Hicks was a star at Ohio State but fizzled with the Giants on some of the worst offenses in team history. Banks became a star at outside linebacker and in enshrined in the team’s Ring of Honor. - Rivers never played a down for the Giants, getting traded on draft day in the deal that brought Eli Manning to New York. Both will be in Canton shortly. - Jeter played six seasons for the Giants before being traded to the Rams, where he played six more years. He is credited with 79.5 sacks in his 12-year career. - Cedric Jones was the player the Giants ended up with in the 1996 draft after losing out on Kevin Hardy, Simeon Rice and Jonathan Ogden. He played in 79 games over five seasons and recorded just 15 sacks. In retrospect, they could have used the pick on Eddie George, Marvin Harrison or Ray Lewis. - Simms became the Giants’ franchise quarterback in the team’s resurgence in the 1980s. He led the Giants to their first NFL Championship in 30 years in 1986 in Super Bowl XXI, where had a record-setting day and was named the game’s MVP. - Hilliard had a solid eight-year career with the Giants and is sixth all-time in receptions and tenth in receiving yards for Big Blue. He played four seasons with Tampa Bay after the left New York. - Jones and Thomas are still with the team and are

Giants assign numbers to newly signed free agents / The first wave of free agency has officially come and gone
Giants assign numbers to newly signed free agents / The first wave of free agency has officially come and gone in the NFL, and to no one’s surprise, the salary cap-crippled New York Giants were very calculated with their moves. - There were no big-splash signings, but the team did focus a lot of their early attention on quality veteran offensive linemen. They also added a few bodies to the quarterback room and signed some depth at wide receiver. - Other signings were also made, but nothing necessarily worth writing home about. - What will interest fans however, are the new jersey numbers being assigned to some of the incoming free agents. But we want to remind everyone before they rush out and buy a jersey: these numbers are potentially temporary and subject to change. - Not all jersey numbers have been assigned yet, either. We will continue to update this post as the Giants work to hand out the digits.

Ex-Giant Jerry Reese interviews for Steelers' GM job / Former New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese is drawing consideration from the Pittsburgh Steelers for their open GM job. The 58-year-old officially interviewed on Saturday. - Reese served as an assistant coach at UT-Martin for eight year before he broke into the NFL with the New York Giants in 1994. He spent his first four years with the team as a college scout before becoming a pro scout. In 2004, Reese was promoted to director of player personnel and in 2007, was hired as the team’s general manager. - At the time of his hiring, Reese became just the third Black GM in NFL history. That same year, he became the first Black GM to win a Super Bowl. - Four years later, as Giants fans know all too well, Reese won a second Super Bowl title when New York again upended the New England Patriots. - Things began to sour after that, however. The Giants’ downfall was swift and Reese got caught up in the current. He, alongside then-head coach Ben McAdoo, were fired midway through the 2017 season. There was no goodbye, no farewell party or anything to acknowledge Reese’s tenure — just an adios and good luck. - Since being fired by the Giants, Reese, who was groomed under Ernie Accorsi, has rarely resurfaced for air. He interviewed for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ vacant GM position in 2021 and drew brief interest from the Atlanta Falcons, but that’s been about it. - Reese has spent the past five years quietly living on a farm in rural Tennessee, but perhaps a return is imminent? The Steelers have interviewed a deep and talented pool, but Reese is both qualified and deserving. It’s well past time he received a second chance. - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.

Giants snatch OT Evan Neal in latest Draft Wire mock / The flurry of activity in the NFL this week
Giants snatch OT Evan Neal in latest Draft Wire mock / The flurry of activity in the NFL this week has shaken up the order for the 2022 NFL draft. The New York Giants have the fifth and seventh picks in said draft and at one time certain players were thought to be long gone by the time they were on the clock. - Not so anymore. - Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling maps out how he sees the first round of the draft playing out and it benefits the Giants, who land offensive tackle Evan Neal at No. 5 overall. - 5. New York Giants | Alabama OT Evan Neal - You can make an argument that Neal should be the first pick in this draft and you wouldn’t get much resistance. A freak of an athlete at 6’7″ 1/2 and 337 pounds, Neal would come right in start at either left or right tackle for the Giants. The Giants’ offensive line would no longer be a liability. A godsend of a pick here. - With their second pick of the first round, the Giants land another Day 1 starter. However, this selection may come with a little criticism given what remained on the board. - 7. New York Giants (from CHI) | Florida State EDGE Jermaine Johnson II - Some would lobby for Georgia’s Travon Walker in this spot and I don’t have an issue with that, but they should take another look at Johnson’s tape. The 6-foot-5, 265 pounder had gotten lost due to his transfer from Georgia to Florida State and his generic name hasn’t helped. Make no mistake, this kid is a dangerous defender who offensive coordinators will have to account for. - In short, the Giants get two big bodies, one on each side of the ball, and finally give themselves a chance to compete. - - List - - 2022 NFL draft: Giants select a new QB in full 7-round mock - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.

Giants' Tyrod Taylor working out alongside Colin Kaepernick / The New York Giants officially announced the signing of quarterback Tyrod Taylor earlier this week, giving them quality depth at the position behind presumed starter Daniel Jones. - But during his introductory Zoom call, Taylor refused to concede the starting role. He was steadfast in his determination to help the team, and that means staying ready to step in when called upon. - It also means keeping his body in shape, his timing down and his mechanics in line. - In an effort to do that, Taylor got right back to work after signing with the Giants. He joined Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Joshua Dobbs and former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick for some private workouts on Friday. - The four got together at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia as Kaepernick continues to attempt and NFL comeback. - - Colin Kaepernick is training with Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, and Josh Dobbs today . #colinkaepernick #justinfields pic.twitter.com/2SszEjm7Ch - — The Brent Hughes Show (@TopFanTV) March 18, 2022 - - - Ironically, the Giants’ decision to sign Taylor as Jones’ backup meant one less potential job for Kaepernick. New York was in search of a veteran quarterback with mobility and some felt Kap fit the bill. Ultimately however, Big Blue went in a different direction. - As for Taylor, he’s no stranger to working alongside Kaepernick. Ex-Giant Evan Engram says goodbye to New York, fans / The Evan Engram era is over in East Rutherford, and both the New York Giants and Engram himself should be thankful. - A first-round pick in 2017, Engram entered the league with high expectations. He was considered a matchup nightmare and a piece that would help put the Giants’ offense over-the-top. Early on, he showed flashes but eventually, the wheels came off. - Engram was never able to grow into the role many anticipated for him, while the coaching staff and personnel repeatedly shifted around him. The constant changes coupled with Engram’s propensity for injury and key drops slowly whittled away at his confidence. And the confidence of the fans. - The union mercifully came to an end early in free agency as Engram agreed to a one-year, $9 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. - On Friday, Engram finally said his goodbyes to New York and the fans who stuck with him. He made no mention of the Giants or his critics. - - Man I got so much love for New York. It will always be a huge part of my life! Thank you to the loyal ones that always had my back through all the ups and downs. I appreciate y’all more than you’ll ever know. #EazyOut - — Evan Engram (@eazyengram) March 19, 2022 - - - Engram tried to avoid conflict with fans and often ignored their boos and criticisms. They didn’t go unnoticed, however — there was no way he didn’t hear it. - Things reached a breaking point in 2021 when Engram was repeatedly showered with boos at MetLife Stadium. Each pass in his direction drew ire from the crowd. If he caught it, they’d give him a sarcastic Bronx cheer. If he didn’t… well, you can imagine how that went. - Engram will have a fresh start in Jacksonville and a new coordinator looking to finally unlock his full potential. - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.

Report: Giants agree to terms with OL Jamil Douglas / The New York Giants continued tinkering with the back-end of their roster on Friday night, agreeing to terms with offensive lineman Jamil Douglas. - The 30-year-old Douglas was a fourth-round pick of the Dolphins in the 2015 NFL draft. He spent the first two seasons of his career in Miami before making stops with the New England Patriots (2016-2017), Atlanta Falcons (2017), Indianapolis Colts (2018) and Tennessee Titans (2018-2020). - In 2021, the Cypress, California native split time between the Buffalo Bills and Washington Commanders. - General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll obviously know some of what they’re getting in Douglas after his cup of coffee in Western New York. - Douglas has appeared in 50 games throughout his career, including 11 starts. Giants' Ricky Seals-Jones looking to plant roots in New York / The New York Giants are filling out their roster with some under-the-radar players along the offensive line and now at tight end with free agent Ricky Seals-Jones. - Fantasy players are aware of Seals-Jones’ existence as he’s flashed over the past few seasons for teams such as Arizona and Washington. But the truth is, he’s basically been a second- and third-teamer who has spent time buried on the depth charts in Cleveland and Kansas City. - With the Giants, Seals-Jones is hoping to challenge for the starting tight end job (or one of them) as Big Blue reshuffles their offense under new head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. - Seals-Jones spoke the Giants beat pool on Friday, staying that he “loves New York” despite wearing a Houston Astros cap for the interview. Kenny Golladay's 2023 roster bonus becomes guaranteed on Friday / - - - One of of the reasons the New York Giants have been scrambling for salary cap space this year is that they overspent the past few years on free agents that haven’t moved the needle for them. - Last year, the Giants signed wide receiver Kenny Golladay $72 million over four years with $40 million guaranteed. Truth be told, other teams wanted him but not at that price. Golladay was coming off an injury-shortened season and was in line for more of a ‘prove-it’ deal but the Giants felt he was worth franchise-level money. - Of course, Golladay got hurt — twice — and was never a significant factor in the Giants’ pop-gun offense. The player who led the NFL in touchdown receptions just two season before scored zero last season. - This year, the Giants had little latitude when it came to Golladay’s contract. With a dead cap charge of over $28 million this year, the Giants were forced to leave it alone. - - It's a good day to be Kenny Golladay (most days are good after you sign a $72M contract). His $4.5M roster bonus for *2023* becomes fully guaranteed today. - — Dan Duggan (@DDuggan21) March 18, 2022 - - - After this season, Golladay’s contract becomes a bit more palatable. His dead cap number in 2023 is just over $10 million, followed by $6.8 million in 2024 and $3.8 million in 2025. - Of course, Golladay’s deal would even be more palatable if he stepped up and became the ‘go-to’ wideout they hoped he could be. But as it stands now, this will be his ‘prove-it’ year. The way the college game is grooming wideouts these days, the position has become so rich and fluid teams would rather take their chances with rookies. - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.

Giants sign TE Ricky Seals-Jones: 5 things to know / The New York Giants have signed former Washington Commanders tight end Ricky Seals-Jones. The signing is not yet official but should be in a matter of days. - Seals-Jones joins a very thinned out group of Giants tight ends and may even be considered option No. 1 at the moment. - Here are five things to know about the newest Giant.

Former Giants scout weighs in on QB Daniel Jones / - - - Barring something unforeseen, the New York Giants are choosing to ride with Daniel Jones in 2022. They signed veteran Tyrod Taylor this week, assumingly to back Jones up. - But there are many who have seen enough of Jones and want to move on. There is also the camp that believes Jones hasn’t been given a fair shot to succeed here and want to give him that shot this year. - So, what do outsiders think of the situation? Tom Rudawsky, a former NFL scout who has worked for the Miami Dolphins and the Giants, who now writes for The 33rd Team blog among other publications had this to say about Jones. - When you put the tape on, it’s easy to see why so many remain steadfast on the 24-year old. Jones has the prototypical QB frame at 6-foot-5, 230 pounds, and possesses top-tier mechanics. At Duke, he was coached by the man who helped groom Peyton and Eli Manning in college — David Cutcliffe. Cutcliffe is highly respected in league circles due to his work with quarterbacks, something that also attracted the Giants to Jones in 2019. Jones has textbook lower body mechanics and footwork, a trait that often leads to very good accuracy to all three levels. He’s got good arm strength — he can drive it into tight windows and deliver it on time across-field. He’s proven to be a very effective deep ball thrower as well. Per NextGenStats, he was the best deep ball thrower (passes 20 yards or more) in the NFL in 2020. - . . . - From a scouting standpoint, he still has issues seeing the field at times, forcing the ball into inopportune situations and struggling to hold onto the ball in the pocket when hit. The decision-making makes you scratch your head at times, as he tries to do too much too often. While there are many factors that contribute to the losing (and to some of his turnovers, for that matter), make no mistake about it: Jones rightfully deserves to be held accountable for the 12-25 record and his 49 turnovers. It’s an ugly part of his résumé as a pro, and if he wants to be viewed as a foundational player and mainstay starter, he must show he can escape both labels. - Rudawsky says Jones is going have to sing for his supper — something that should have happened last year — and there may not be any clear closure to the debate on whether he is the long term answer. - Entering the 2021 season, many labeled Jones as one of the players in the NFL with the most pressure on him. I’d argue there’s far greater pressure on the even-keeled 24-year-old entering 2022. As complicated as his situation has been over his first three years, the path that lies ahead really is quite simple: Either he plays his way into

2022 NFL draft: Giants should now be in on Kyle Hamilton / - - - The New York Giants hold the fifth and seventh selections in the 2022 NFL draft next month. They were not expected to use either on a safety. - That is, until Thursday when they released veteran safety Logan Ryan in a surprise move. Ryan’s release leaves the Giants with just four safeties on the roster — budding star Xavier McKinney, Julian Love, J.R. Reed and Steven Parker. - Does this mean that the Giants could entertain takin Notre Dame’s stud safety, Kyle Hamilton, with one of those picks should he be available? - That remains to be seen but the argument can certainly be made. What we do know is that Hamilton is the highest-rated prospect by NFL Network’s Lance Zierlein with a grade of 6.88, which projects to “Year 1 Starter” status. - Hamilton is 6-foot-4 and weighs in at 220 pounds. His NFL comparison is former Seattle Seahawks All-Pro Kam Chancellor, the leader of legendary ‘Legion of Boom’ and, oh, he ran a 4.59 40-yard dash at the NFL combine this year and has 33-inch arms. - From Zierlein: - High-impact safety with unique blend of traits and characteristics that make him a bit of a unicorn at the position. Hamilton has the eyes and speed to play over the top, the strength and toughness to play near the line, and coverage length to guard elite pass-catching tight ends who often mismatch opposing defenses. - It’s rare to find such a ferocious striker and intimidator who has the football intelligence and athletic prowess to go make plays in the passing game, but Hamilton provides it all. He thrives playing downhill or sinking into a robber alignment on the back-end but will have occasional missteps in coverage when in retreat from his pedal. Hamilton has the traits and football character to transition from standout college moments to a standout pro career as a future Pro Bowler with All-Pro potential. - The Giants’ decision on what to do in the first round of the draft this year just got a little harder. - NFL Draft: Will Kyle Hamilton be a top-5 pick? - Powered By PickUp - - List - - New York Giants' 2022 free agency scorecard - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - -

Report: Ex-Giant Logan Ryan agrees to terms with Buccaneers / - - - The New York Giants released safety Logan Ryan on Thursday evening in what many considered a surprising move. The cut saved the Giants just $775,000 in cap space and left them with a dead money hit of nearly $11.5 million. - But don’t feel sorry for Ryan, whom several in the Giants front office apparently wanted gone. - Less than 16 hours after his release, the long-time NFL veteran has agreed to terms with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and will reunite with his former New England Patriots teammate, Tom Brady. - - #GoBucs https://t.co/gqDq4wQDwG - — Logan Ryan (@RealLoganRyan) March 18, 2022 - - - Ryan, while a member of the Tennessee Titans, infamously intercepted Brady’s final pass in a Patriots uniform. The two were also slated to square off last season when the Giants visited the Bucs in Tampa Bay, but Ryan ultimately missed the game after testing positive for COVID-19. - The Giants, meanwhile, now find themselves in the market for a new safety and some defensive leadership. - - List - - Giants release Logan Ryan: How his teammates reacted - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.

Giants release Logan Ryan: How his teammates reacted / The New York Giants released safety Logan Ryan on Thursday evening, saving little more than $775,000 in the process. The move will cost them $11.45 million in dead cap. - The decision to cut Ryan is a curious one. The team is now thin at the safety position and have one less leader on the defensive side of the ball. The community also takes a hit as Ryan and his wife, Ashley, were heavily involved. - Ryan’s release will also take a toll on the locker room. He was widely respected by all four corners, and that was evident in the way his teammates (now former) reacted to the news.

Giants re-sign OL Korey Cunningham / Lost in Thursday’s shuffle, which saw the New York Giants release safety Logan Ryan and several major moves around the NFL, was the team’s decision to re-sign offensive lineman Korey Cunningham. - The 26-year-old Cunningham was a seventh-round pick of the Cardinals in 2018. After spending his rookie season in Arizona, he spent two years with the New England Patriots, including one year alongside ex-Giants Joe Judge in 2019. - Cunningham and Judge reunited in East Rutherford last season when the veteran lineman was initially signed to the Giants’ practice squad. He was later promoted to the active roster. - In four professional seasons, Cunningham has appeared in 30 games with six starts. He appeared in 12 games (no starts) for the Giants in 2021, earning a Pro Football Focus grade of 51.7. - Cunningham will rejoin the Giants in 2022 and compete for a spot as a reserve. - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.

Giants eat ton of dead cap with release of captain Logan Ryan / Editor’s note: Initial reports from ESPN suggested the Giants would save $6.3 million with the release of Ryan. Those reports have proven incorrect. - The New York Giants released a veteran defensive back on Thursday but it wasn’t the one everyone expected. - Safety Logan Ryan, a defensive captain, was the player let go, not cornerback James Bradberry, who the Giants are still hoping to trade. - Ryan announced his release and said his goodbyes via Twitter. The Giants later confirmed the transaction. - - Thank You NY Captain Log Out pic.twitter.com/Pl6m2Y3nJC - — Logan Ryan (@RealLoganRyan) March 17, 2022 - - - Initial reports suggested the Giants would save around $6.3 million in cap space based on contractual guarantee dates. However, the actual savings will be as little as $775,000. - - Deleted my Logan Ryan tweet. Appears I got bad information. - The move only saves $775,000 it turns out. - — Zack Rosenblatt (@ZackBlatt) March 17, 2022 - - - - Final answer on this (probably): Giants clear $775,000 in cap space by cutting Logan Ryan, per multiple sources. It was not a cost-cutting move. - (I know there are reports that say it's more and there is confusion over his guaranteed money. But this is my final answer for now). https://t.co/1c52YLuthr - — Ralph Vacchiano (@RVacchianoSNY) March 17, 2022 - - - - The confusion with this is Ryan has a quirk in his contract. Long story short, $5.5M of his $9.25M salary for 2022 was fully guaranteed. Another $3M would have become fully guaranteed if we was on the roster tomorrow. So they needed to cut him before tomorrow for any savings. - — Dan Duggan (@DDuggan21) March 17, 2022 - - - Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reported early in the offseason that some in the front office wanted to move on from Ryan, who was a primary supporter of Joe Judge. - There are some people in the Giants’ front office that want to move on from the veteran safety, the Daily News has learned. But Ryan, who turned 31 on Feb. 9, is a critical leader and contributor. - . . . - No one has delivered Ryan any bad news yet, to The News’ knowledge. It wouldn’t hurt if new defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale went to bat for Ryan, though. He provides significant value on and off the field. - In 15 games last season, Ryan recorded the lowest Pro Football Focus grade (60.4) of his career. He also allowed 81.4% of all targets in his direction to be caught, surrendering three touchdowns in the process. His also missed 10 tackles. - Will Raiders sign Logan Ryan? - Powered By PickUp - - List - - New York Giants' 2022 free agency scorecard -

Report: Giants center Nick Gates suffers minor setback in rehab / - - - The New York Giants have been adding to their offensive line stable the past few days with the signing of tackle Matt Gono, guard Mark Glowinski and prospective center Jon Feliciano. That’s about as good a use of the very little salary cap space they have as one could give hoped. - But they are far from done. The offensive line will still be a top focus this summer in both free agency and the upcoming draft. The three new faces will likely compete for starting spots on the line. - Currently, only left tackle is penciled in with former first rounder Andrew Thomas developing into a franchise player. The other four spots are up for grabs. - Shane Lemieux will vie for a guard spot after missing most of last season with a knee injury. So will his replacement, Ben Bredeson, who the Giants got in a trade with Baltimore last season. At tackle, Matt Peart is still on the roster and the new coaching staff will attempt to revive his prospects. - Feliciano will be tried at center, which he calls his favorite position. He likely won’t get a challenge from Nick Gates, who apparently is not close to returning from the frightening leg injury he suffered last season. - - People are asking me about Nick Gates since the Feliciano signing. I’m hearing Gates had a little setback with the rod in his leg and is not expected to be on the field for a awhile. Giants were NFL's second-most stressful team to watch in 2021 / - - - You don’t have to tell the fans of the New York Giants that they are stressful to watch. With five consecutive double-digit loss seasons (and seven of the last eight) in the books, Big Blue has become painful to follow. - The folks at Action Network rated every team in the NFL on the stress factor they had on their fans and the Giants came in second to the Baltimore Ravens. - The Ravens came in first due to their six close losses and five close wins. The Giants were a distant second with 13 overall losses and massive games lost due to injury. - The New York Giants place second on the list of most stressful teams to support with a total index score of 86.73. The Giants were especially guilty of sloppy play last season. They had more giveaways per game than any other NFL franchise (1.8). They also suffered more injuries than any other team. Giants players missed an incredible combined 369 games between September 2021 and February 2022. - While expectations were relatively low for the Giants at the outset of the season, fans were still likely to find themselves upset and disappointed with how things went on the field for their Giants in 2021-22. - Ah, injuries. The Giants have changed so many faces over the past decade but are still encountering an usually high rash of injuries each year. The new general manager and coaching staff perhaps can put an end to that because if they don’t, they will suffer the same fate that has caused the Giants to churn through five head coaches in the past seven years. - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.

Giants land edge rusher, tackle in latest PFF mock draft / - - - NFL free agency is heading into full swing, so many of the previous mock drafts are being rendered irrelevant from a team ‘needs’ standpoint as teams being not fill their glaring holes with free agents. - In their latest 2022 mock draft, the folks at Pro Football Focus didn’t really care about that too much. They believe teams will still seek to fill their weakest positions with highly-ranked rookies through the draft. - When it comes to the New York Giants, PFF still sees them bringing in the big bodies with the firth and seventh overall selections — one of defense, one on offense. - 5. NEW YORK GIANTS: EDGE JERMAINE JOHNSON, FLORIDA STATE - One of the biggest risers in this draft class kept that momentum going at the combine. Johnson has proven throughout this process that he’s a total-package edge player and one of the best players in the draft. - The 6-foot-5, 262-pound Jermaine Johnson began his career at Georgia before transferring to FSU, and most would have mocked another Bulldog to the Giants (Travon Walker) here ahead of Johnson but the fact is, they both are forces to be reckoned with. - Johnson was the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2021 with 23 runs stops and 14 sacks. He can play either side of the line with his hand in the dirt or standing and is not a liability in coverage if asked to drop back. New defense coordinator Wink Martindale would have fun with him and make opponents miserable. - 7. NEW YORK GIANTS (VIA CHI): OT TREVOR PENNING, NORTHERN IOWA - The Giants re-signed offensive tackle Matt Gono and guard Mark Glowinski. They also signed guard Jon Feliciano. But I don’t think they’re done prioritizing the offensive line. Something Giants new GM Joe Schoen emphasized multiple times at his combine presser was the qualities of offensive linemen being “smart, tough and dependable.” He went on to detail traits of speed and strength. Now, any coach would want those qualities but after seeing Penning impress athletically at the combine, it makes me think he could be very high on their list. - At 6-foot-7 and 325 pounds, Trevor Penning is surely big enough to be an effective tackle in the NFL. What’s not listed here is his strength and demeanor. The Giants want to add some nastiness and finishers up front and this kid fits both bills. - - List - - New York Giants' 2022 free agency scorecard - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? -

2022 NFL draft: Giants officially have 9 picks / The NFL awarded 39 compensatory picks in the 2022 NFL draft to a total of 16 teams on Tuesday, but the New York Giants were not among them. - As expected, the Giants were blanked in the compensatory formula. They also failed to trade cornerback James Bradberry by the official start to the new league year, meaning no additional picks were acquire. Yet. - The Bradberry situation remains fluid and is subject to change, so additional assets could still be had later on down the road. But for now, the Giants’ nine picks have been made official and the positions set in stone. - - Round 1 (No. 5 overall) - Round 1 (No. 7 overall) - Round 2 (No. 36 overall) - Round 3 (No. 67 overall) - Round 3 (No. 81 overall) - Round 4 (No. 112 overall) - Round 5 (No. 147 overall) - Round 5 (No. 173 overall) - Round 6 (No. 182 overall) - - The five top 100 picks give the Giants and general manager Joe Schoen a ton of maneuverability. They could stay in place and use all five or they could use them to either trade up and down in the order. Whatever the case may be, the options are plentiful early on. - After Round 4 however, things fall off for the Giants. They have no seventh-round picks, their sixth-round pick comes late and even their second fifth-round pick is of mild value. - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.

Jon Feliciano excited to play his 'best position' with Giants / - - - Jon Feliciano has spent the vast majority of his professional career taking snaps at guard. That comes on the heels of taking most of his college snaps at tackle. - But in 2022 with the New York Giants, Feliciano won’t see time at either position. Rather, he’ll be converted to center — something he’s been clamoring for dating back to his days with the Oakland Raiders. - “Going back to my Oakland days, I had a guy, Rodney Hudson, who’s a top-tier, one-two center the last 10 years. I got to pick his brain and learn from him, and Mike Tice and Tim Holt,” Feliciano told reporters on Wednesday. “I took those four years of being a rotational guy, a back-up guy, to learn a position that I didn’t play in college. - “In college I played tackle, I played both tackles and then left guard. So, from those first four years, I got to learn center and I really fell in love with it. Just the responsibility that is on your hands to come in every week and everything is basically on you. You’ve got to know the defense. You’ve got to make all of the calls for the guys around you. I take a lot of pride in knowing that stuff. - “I’ve been in a lot of people’s ears for a lot of years trying to get into the center position. I honestly think it’s my best position, and I’m just really excited to finally get to show what I’ve got.” - The Giants were certainly in need of a center entering the offseason. Nick Gates suffered a horrific leg injury a season ago and there’s no guarantee that he’ll be able to play in 2022, so Feliciano made sense. He’s got obvious familiarity with head coach Brian Daboll and understands his offense, plus he’s got past experience with offensive line coach Bobby Johnson. - “It started when I was a rotational guy and Bobby did the goal-line plays, so every week he would draw up the goal line plays and he started looking out for me and putting me in as a fullback, or tight end, basically just looking out for me and putting me in anywhere he could. Even went out in motion and ran a couple of routes. It’s every fat man’s dream,” Feliciano said with a laugh. “But our relationship started from there.” - With the Giants, Feliciano will be in control of the communication and blocking assignments. It’s a tall order but one he’s taking seriously, especially given his thoughts on quarterback Daniel Jones. - “when I went to Buffalo the first time, they were struggling up front — the offensive line was,” he said. “Our 2019 free agent o-line group, we understood going in that this team had potential if we had the quarterback upright. I believe the same thing watching Danny Dimes play. I
