Brian Daboll has been head coach of the New York Giants for less than 72 hours and there are already some talking about his termination. - Colin Cowherd of FOX Sports Radio is one of those people. - During what can only be described as a mini-rant, Cowherd blasted the Giants’ decision to stick with quarterback Daniel Jones. He believes — as he’s said before — that Big Blue should gamble their entire future on Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, even if it means trading a full decade worth of first-round picks. - Cowherd also believes that if the Giants stick with Jones, Daboll will be out of a job within three years and general manager Joe Schoen will be on the hot seat. - - “Go big. Call Seattle and make an offer they can’t refuse for Russell Wilson.” - — @ColinCowherd reacts to Giants hiring Brian Daboll pic.twitter.com/7y8WGceulB - — The Volume (@TheVolumeSports) January 29, 2022 - - - “I think both (Daboll) and the new GM have a chance to succeed if they’re allowed to choose personnel. However, the Mara family wants Daniel Jones to work so Daboll will make him the best version of Daniel Jones he can,” Cowherd said. - “By Year 2, they draft a rookie quarterback. Most of those are not nearly as good as predicted, some are busts. Daboll nonetheless will be asked to win with that rookie quarterback. And by Year 3 — in Year 2 for the quarterback and Year 3 for Daboll — he will need to win or he will be fired. Rinse and repeat for the Giants,” Cowherd continued. - That’s quite the conspiracy theory with a side of fearmonger from Cowherd, who, as a shock jock, intentionally says the most outlandish things possible. - There are two major issues punching a hole in Cowherd’s theory here: First and foremost, both Daboll and Joe Schoen are very open about their feelings on Jones. Secondly, the pair have been given full autonomy on personnel decisions so long as they are in agreement with each other. Mara essentially serves as a tiebreaker. - Beyond just that, Cowherd paints a picture where Daboll will be fired in every scenario that doesn’t involve trading for Wilson. In his mind, that’s the only answer for the Giants and who cares if they send Seattle 10 first-round picks? Who cares that Schoen values his selections highly and prefers building through the draft? Who cares if the Giants can’t field a competitive team if Wilson is under center? - The issue for Cowherd is that he simply can’t believe those in charge in East Rutherford disagree with him. In his mind, if Schoen and Daboll want Jones and not Deshaun Watson or Russell Wilson, then it must be the fault of John Mara — it couldn’t possibly be anything. - The irony is that Cowherd believes Daboll is a good coach and Schoen has the chance to be a great GM because “he’s from Buffalo and they have their act together.” He expects success if the Giants allow them to do their jobs. - That makes sense. Now imagine a scenario in which that’s a fair assessment and both Daboll and Schoen want Jones as their quarterback. Are you there? Good, because so are Schoen and Daboll. - Perhaps Cowherd should heed his own advice and trust the “good coach” and quality GM when it comes to Daniel Jones. Let them do their jobs and stop screaming from the armchair. - - List - - 15 ex-Giants will play in conference championship games - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
