New York Giants special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey, who is likely going to be a head coach someday, drew quite a bit of interest this offseason. He interviewed with both the Chicago Bears and Los Angeles Chargers, and appeared to be a frontrunner in L.A. for a while. - Ultimately however, Thomas McGaughey will not depart to either Chicago or Los Angeles. Rather, Art Stapleton of USA TODAY reports that the 48-year-old assistant will remain in East Rutherford. - - I’m told #Giants are expected to retain Thomas McGaughey as their special teams coordinator, per sources. He’ll serve with his third head coach here: Pat Shurmur, Joe Judge and now Brian Daboll.TMac was also with NYG as assistant special teams coach with Tom Coughlin - — Art Stapleton (@art_stapleton) February 1, 2022 - - - As Stapleton notes, McGaughey has significant staying power in New York. He was a member of the staff under Tom Coughlin from 2007 through 2010 before returning in 2018. Since then, he’s remained in place under Pat Shutmur, Joe Judge and now, Brian Daboll. - It’s no surprise that McGaughey got the nod considering he’s one of the best special teams coaches in the NFL. Even last season — widely considered a down year for the unit — McGaughey’s group finished 10th-best in the NFL. - In addition to McGaughey, the Giants will also retain assistant general manager Kevin Abrams and director of football operations Ed Triggs, as well as defensive coordinator Patrick Graham — assuming he doesn’t get the head coaching job in Minnesota. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
