The New York Giants are heading into their next phase with a new general manager (Joe Schoen), a new head coach (Brian Daboll) and a new coaching staff that includes offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. - They are likely to change much of what this inept Giants offense has been recently, but one piece they are not changing is the starting quarterback. - Daniel Jones is said to be the choice under center this season even though his first three years have been inconclusive when it comes to whether he is the long term answer at quarterback. - Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine has listed Jones as a potential ‘bust’ entering this season if he should falter again. - (Jones) has only thrown four more touchdowns than sixth-round pick Gardner Minshew with more than double the interceptions. That’s not a great sign that Jones is ever going to become a franchise passer. - Jones showed some promise in his rookie season. He threw 24 touchdowns to 12 interceptions and eclipsed 3,000 yards in 13 games. - Unfortunately, there hasn’t been improvement since. - It’s hard to put all the blame on Jones, though. In three years, he’s been coached by Pat Shurmur and Joe Judge with Mike Shula, Jason Garrett and Freddie Kitchens as his offensive coordinators. He’s also absorbed over 100 sacks. - That punishment leads to another question with Jones which is health. He has missed at least two games every year and six in 2021 due to injuries. - Ballentine does mention the overall instability Jones has had to deal with since being taking sixth overall out of Duke in 2019. He’s had two head coaches and three offensive coordinators and a revolving supporting cast which has not served him well. - Also take into account are the multiple injuries Jones has sustained causing him to miss games in each of his first three seasons in the NFL. Last year, Jones missed the final six games with a neck injury. - But there is hope. Ballentine believes Jones should benefit from an upgraded roster and the tutelage he will receive from Daboll and Kafka. - With Daboll coming over from the Bills, it’s gut-check time for Jones. Daboll had great success working with Josh Allen, and four years is plenty of time to evaluate a quarterback’s potential. He has to get off to a hot start with his new coach to avoid being called a bust. - The Giants aren’t likely to exercise Jones’ fifth-year option this May, so he’s not only heading into a ‘prove-it’ year with the Giants. he’ll be auditioning for the rest of the league as well. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
