New York Giants tight end Evan Engram will be an unrestricted free agent next month when his fifth-year option runs out. The former 2017 first-round selection out of Ole Miss has appeared to run his course with the Giants after five years of inconsistency that was often interrupted by injury and marred by dropped passes. - Engram was targeted 73 times in 2021, catching 46 passes for 408 yards and three touchdowns. - For years, the Giants had no idea what to do with Engram. He was a tad too small to play as an in-line tight end and the three separate coaching staffs were reluctant to put him as a wide receiver. - That all changed last season when the Giants brought in veteran tight end Kyle Rudolph and the team suffered a spate of injuries to their wide receiver group. - Engram was forced outside into the slot and in cases, outside of the numbers. - - Eight tight ends ran at least 75% of their routes from the slot or out wide in 2021 (min. 100 routes, PFF) - Mike Gesicki (92%)Anthony Firkser (87%)Kyle Pitts (80%)Mark Andrews (79%)Dan Arnold (78%)Evan Engram (78%)Logan Thomas (76%)Juwan Johnson (76%) - — Ian Hartitz (@Ihartitz) February 18, 2022 - - - Where does this leave Engram as he enters free agency? Well, a creative offensive coordinator could finally tap into his potential. That my not be here with the Giants, however, who have very little cap space at the moment to use on a lark. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
