New York Giants tight end Evan Engram is slated to become an unrestricted free agent in March, while veteran Kyle Rudolph is a potential cap casualty. That leaves general manager Joe Schoen & Co. dangerously thin at the position. - With so many other areas of need, that could be very problematic for the Giants. There’s also Engram’s unrealized potential, which would make him a frustrating loss for some in the building. - Engram was also one of the Giants’ few consistent offensive threats in 2022, which speaks volumes given his overall level of inconsistency. But it’s precisely why Gil Brandt of NFL Network believes Engram is a “must keep” for the Giants. - Engram still has yet to match his rookie-year highs in targets (115), catches (64), receiving yards (722) or receiving TDs (six). There isn’t much good to take from the Giants’ dreadful offensive efforts in 2021, but Engram did lead the team in scoring grabs (three), and he was the only player on the roster to post a passer rating when targeted in the triple digits (132.3) on red-zone plays last season, although the sample size there (four targets) was small. The Giants have plenty of players bound for free agency, including multiple starting offensive linemen, but Brian Daboll figures to find a way to put Engram to good use as he tries to spark the offense under Daniel Jones. - Newly hired head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka could be exactly what the doctor ordered for Engram, but at what cost? Some team is bound to throw a boatload of money at Engram based on potential alone, and he may be thinking a divorce is best for both sides. Things have obviously not gone according to plan in East Rutherford. - Still, Engram’s potential coupled with a unique offensive system is intriguing. One of the reasons Engram has been hindered since entering the league — outside of his own issues with drops — has been his misuse. Whether it was Ben McAdoo, Pat Shurmur or Joe Judge, no one has been able to take advantage of Engram’s unique skill set. Daboll and Kafka seem like guys who would get it right. - Ultimately, however, it may be too little, too late to for Engram and the Giants. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
