The New York Giants offense, which has been among the NFL’s worst the past two seasons, may finally headed in the right direction. - The hiring of Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks coach Mike Kafka as their new offensive coordinator is being widely praised as a bold stroke by incoming head coach Brian Daboll. - Kafka was a star at Northwestern as a quarterback before being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL draft. He bounced around as backup and practice squad player for six seasons before heading into coaching. - In 2016, Kafka joined his alma mater as graduate assistant on Pat Fitzgerald’s staff before heading to Kansas City to work for Andy Reid the following year. - Fitzgerald has known Kafka since he scouted him in high school as an assistant at NU. The two reunited in 2005 and Fitzgerald took over as head coach the next season. Kafka become the starting quarterback as a senior in 2009. - Fitzgerald believes the Giants are getting a budding star in Kafka. He has full faith in Kafka’s abilities, which have been on display out in Kansas City for the past five years. He believes Kafka will do a great job for the Giants. - “I will tell you this, the New York football Giants are gonna get a terrific person who is going to grind and do everything he can to help that organization win and I think just embodies what New York and Chicago are all about,” Fitzgerald told the New York Post on Friday. - Fitzgerald also believes that the 34-year-old is likely to become a head coach some day. - “Absolutely, there’s no question in my mind,” said Fitzgerald. “First of all, he’s a Northwestern man, so he’s incredibly bright. He was unbelievably dedicated and just a relentless football player. He played at a high level and knows what it takes to get there so he’s experienced what the players will have experienced. . .he was willing to grind. - “He came here, he went into a kind of a non-coaching role with the Chiefs and to see the way he’s grown up in this profession, I think he’s a superstar. I think he’s gonna do a great job there with the Giants and then the sky’s the limit for Mike. If it’s being the head coach here I hope he gives me a few more years.” - - RelatedBill Barnwell: Giants must decline Daniel Jones' fifth-year optionDaniel Jeremiah: Ikem Ekwonu would be 'slam dunk' pick for GiantsReport: Some in Giants front office want to move on from Logan Ryan - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
