New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen wants to clear upwards of $40 million in salary cap space this offseason, but he’s not going to restructure a ton of contracts to get there. - Speaking with reporters at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday, Schoen said that contract restructures are a “last resort” as opposed to a necessity. - - #Giants Joe Schoen says that restructuring contracts for cap space is ‘a last resort’ - — Ryan Dunleavy (@rydunleavy) March 1, 2022 - - - The quick comment may have seemed like a throw-away line, but that’s far from the case. Given the Giants’ current cap situation and the money they’re aiming to clear, that essentially means the roster will be gutted in the coming weeks. - And Schoen didn’t shy away from that reality, either. He acknowledged he’s “open to everything” with the exception of trading wide receiver Kadarius Toney. - “Like whether it’s trading player for player; I’ll listen to anybody. If it’s trading a couple players — I’m not going to say the entire roster, [that] we’re open for business on the entire roster. But if anyone is going to call and they’re interested in any of our players. I’m certainly going to listen,” Schoen said. - “Again, we’re in a situation where unfortunately we have to get under the salary cap. We’re not in very good salary-cap health. Again, I’m not going to say yes to every deal, but I’m definitely going to listen and be open to the situations that are best for the New York Giants.” - And when will this cap cutting begin? “Soon,” Schoen said. - - RelatedGiants ignore offensive line, go all defense in latest Mel Kiper Jr. mockEx-Giant Eli Apple mercilessly trolled during Mardi GrasOdell Beckham Jr. shuts down any notion of potential Giants return - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
