When Jabrill Peppers went down with a torn ACL during the 2021 season, many tabbed that as his final game in a New York Giants uniform. - Peppers was, of course, acquired in the infamous Odell Beckham Jr. trade that brought the safety to New Jersey to play in his home state. - As general manager Joe Schoen continues to evaluate the Giants roster, including the pending free agents, many believe that Big Blue will ultimately let Peppers walk. However, as Peppers continues to rehab to get back from injury, he may be taking advantage of his time at the team facility as he gets to know the new GM and coaching staff. - - I'm told Jabrill Peppers has made frequent stops in #Giants facility as he continues his ACL rehab. Just a nugget I've heard. Doesn't mean he will re-sign, but suggests he hasn't cut ties and has gotten to know new staff. Once free agency opens, injured players stop coming in. - — Ryan Dunleavy (@rydunleavy) March 11, 2022 - - - Peppers is still technically a part of the Giants roster until free agency starts on March 16th, when the NFL’s new league year begins. - Like Peppers, Sterling Shepard was another player many tabbed to be let go this offseason. Shepard wasn’t due to become a free agent but given his contract and the Giants’ salary cap crunch, the receiver seemed to be an inevitable cap casualty. - However, when asked to rework his contract, the Giants’ longest-tenured player agreed to a pay cut this past week. After Shepard’s Achilles injury at the end of the season, his value on the open market likely went down, which could have factor into his though process to take a pay cut. - With Peppers having an injury just as severe, there is a possibility for him to sign a one-year “prove it” deal to stay with his hometown Giants and to get better value on the market next offseason. - As free agency nears, so does the Giants’ decision on Peppers. With the emergence of Xavier McKinney, the team may elect to let Peppers walk. However, there may also be value in his leadership and keeping arguably the team’s strongest and deepest unit, the defensive backfield, together going into 2022. - - List - - Under-the-radar free agents Giants could target - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
