It’s unclear exactly how much salary cap space the New York Giants have to deal with right now, but one thing is clear — they are heading in the right direction. - This week, the team reworked the contracts of two valuable veterans — defensive captain Blake Martinez and wide receiver Sterling Shepard in their ongoing efforts to get under the 208.2 million salary cap and free up money for free agency, which begins in a few short days. - - I'm told both Sterling Shepard and Blake Martinez agreed to base salaries of roughly $2.25m with a chance to double that ($5m or so) in total with incentives in new deals. Should drop Martinez's cap # from $14m to about $8 and Shepard's from $12.4m to about $6.5m. - — Tom Rock (@TomRock_Newsday) March 12, 2022 - - - Both Over the Cap and Spotrac have the Giants still over the cap by about $3.8 million but have not calculated the above cuts into the mix as of yet. Once that is done, the Giants should be in the black by approximately $9 million. - General manager Joe Schoen’s goal is to free up $40 million in cap space but he’s got a ways to go to get there. The Giants don’t have many places left to turn. They are reportedly trying to trade cornerback James Bradberry and could possibly turn to their other three highest paid players (Leonard Williams, Adoree’ Jackson and Kenny Golladay) for some relief via reworked deals. - - List - - Under-the-radar free agents Giants could target - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
