USAT: Giants Wire

- - - As the start of the new league year approaches, rumors of quarterback Mitchell Trubisky to the New York Giants persist. - The Giants, of course, are looking to upgrade their backup quarterback position and provide Daniel Jones some training camp competition. And given Trubisky’s connections to general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, the move would make sense. - But that’s where the sense ends. - Trubisky is a surprisingly hot name with free agency looming and many expect him to be paid well — some even believe he’ll be overpaid. In fact, former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum think the former first-round pick could get up to $16 million in 2022. - That’s far too rich for the Giants’ blood but even beyond that, they have a better starting option in Jones. And that opinion is shared by retired Giant and two-time Super Bowl champion Lawrence Tynes. - - I would go NUTS if the Giants sign Mitch Trubisky, I really would. We have his twin brother in Daniel Jones with more upside, we think. - Let's see if we can Jones to play better with better players (OL) and scheme around him. PLEASE PLEASE do not sign Trubisky, what a waste! - — ???????? ????? (@lt4kicks) March 14, 2022 - - - Tynes is essentially echoing what those of us at Giants Wire (and others) have already expressed. If Trubisky was to come in as a low-cost backup option, that would be one thing. But at between $10 – $16 million? That just doesn’t make any sense for the cash-strapped organization. - The notion that Trubisky is somehow more talented or has a higher ceiling than Jones is just not steeped in any sort of reality. It’s an anti-Jones sentiment for the sake of being an anti-Jones sentiment. - - List - - Under-the-radar free agents Giants could target - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - Sign up - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - An error has occured - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
