During a Week 18 loss to the Washington Football Team, then-New York Giants head coach Joe Judge and his offensive play-caller, Freddie Kitchens, made some interesting decisions. - Among the most heavily criticized were back-to-back quarterback sneaks down just 3-0 in the second quarter. - The purpose, Judge later said, was to avoid a safety — something they had experienced a week earlier in a similar situation — and to give punter Riley Dixon some room to work with in his own end zone. - “We were backed up, I wanted to get room,” Judge told reporters after the game. “We were gonna give ourselves room for the punt. We did that. We gave ourselves room for the punt, we protected it. We covered well. We played the field position situation I want to play. We held them on the next drive, and that’s the way we want to go ahead and play that.” - The decision to QB sneak in that situation drew heavy mocking from inside of the sports world and outside of it. Even Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers took unprovoked aim at Judge and the Giants during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show just days later. - On Monday night, the derision continued with Peyton Manning getting in on the action during ESPN’s ManningCast. - - “At least the Rams are sneaking it down by the goal line unlike the Giants who sneak it in the open field” – Peyton - "No comment, no comments" – Eli #ManningCast pic.twitter.com/fD57NK7sE8 - — Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) January 18, 2022 - - - “Eli, at least the Rams are sneaking it down by the goal line unlike the Giants who sneak it in the open field,” Peyton said. - “No comment, no comment,” Eli said with a laugh. “Washington had not seen that.” - Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who was among Monday night’s guests, also got a good chuckle out of the exchange. - For the Giants, the back-to-back QB sneaks have become the new Miami boat picture. It lurks around every corner and is now the punchline to many a comedian’s joke. And until the team finally turns this ship around, both will continue to haunt the franchise. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
