After every season, the NFL determines how much empty salary cap space each team has available to carry over into the next season. - One would think that the New York Giants, who finished 4-13 in 2021, would be carrying over a sizable sum into 2022. That’s not the case. - According to ESPN NFL reporter Field Yates, the Giants are only carrying $13,986 into 2022. That’s among the lowest unintentional rollovers of unused cap space in NFL history. - - NFL teams recently declared unused 2021 cap space rollover amounts (below). - After the playoffs, the NFL will audit incentives, bonuses, etc by team. That figure will be added/subtracted to the number below. - The sum + the 2022 Salary Cap = each team's 2022 adjusted cap number. pic.twitter.com/BMThnJyLpa - — Field Yates (@FieldYates) January 17, 2022 - - - - Second lowest “purposeful” rollover. As @TexansCap pointed out, 2016 #Seahawks came in lower. The $0 teams I don’t count because it was a purposeful effort to zero roll. - — Charles Robinson (@CharlesRobinson) January 17, 2022 - - - The Giants have outgoing general manager Dave Gettleman and current assistant general manager Kevin Abrams to thank for that. They were forced to pad the roster with free agents after Gettleman’s drafts failed to produce, signing players to some egregious contracts that had GMs around the league up in arms. - As a result, the Giants are in ‘salary cap hell’ and are approximately $5.7 million over the 2022 cap at the moment. The new general manager will have his hands full trying to rectify the sorry roster Gettleman left behind with hardly any cap space to operate with. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
