One benefit of having a special teams coach as your head coach is having an above-average special teams unit. Joe Judge — and special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey — were able to lead the Giants to the 10th-best special teams ranking in the 2021 season. - The annual rankings were released by Rick Gosselin of Sports Illustrated. - The Giants were one of four teams that did not have any negative plays (“no blocked kicks, turnovers, or return touchdowns”) on special teams. They were also top-five in a plethora of special teams stats during the year: - - The Giants were the league’s best team in kickoff coverage allowing a mere 17.81 yards per return. The Giants were also third in average opponent starting position as the opponent started on their 23.8-yard line on average. - The Giants were second in opponent punting, as opponents only punted 43.5 on average against Big Blue. The Giants were also fifth in opponent net punting as opponents only flipped the field 39 yards on average. - Finally, the Giants were tied for first on extra point percentage as Graham Gano did not miss a point-after attempt. Gano is the face of this special teams unit going forward and he has been among the league’s best kickers. - - Hopefully for New York, this success can continue under a new general manager and head coach. - Follow the Giants Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
