The New York Giants hired Joe Schoen as their general manager on Friday, poaching him from the Buffalo Bills and their GM, Brandon Beane. - Shortly after the announcement that Schoen had been hired, Beane gathered reporters from both East Rutherford and Buffalo on a conference call. Throughout, he spoke highly of Schoen and what he will bring to the Giants. - “I’m sad personally to lose Joe and I know a lot of people in the building will be,” Beane said. “He is such a good person and he really worked hard for us these last five seasons, but it’s a gain for the Giants. I’m happy for him, Marie and their family. They’re going to do great. - “He’s a great evaluator. He’s a great communicator. He’s a really good leader. He can talk to the owner, he can talk to anybody, a sponsor, fans, whoever. He just knows how to relate. He’s very personable, a family guy. I can go on and on. - “We’ll miss him. You don’t replace people like that right away.” - Beane believes Schoen is perfectly suited to take on the role of GM, having been involved in every aspect of a day-to-day responsibilities during his years in Buffalo. - “I let Joe be involved in everything and if he wasn’t in a meeting . . . he was in many of ’em, but if he was not I shared with him the reasoning behind it so that he could understand that,” Beane said. “Joe has dealt with agents, he has recruited players here. He understands all of that stuff. He’s got great relationships with other GMs, assistant GMs, personnel directors, coaches around the league. Those are all the reasons I think he’s gonna be very successful when he gets himself planted there in New York.” - One thing Beane also guaranteed is that Schoen will never let the Giants down. - “Dependable,” Beane said. “He’s never gonna let you down. In this job you can’t be everywhere. I can’t be with the scouts and also with the coaches or also down in the training room and he was another set of eyes and ears and he’s just, I know it’s gonna be done the right way. I didn’t have to go back behind him, and this goes back to when he was working for me in Carolina. There’s so many adjectives that I could describe Joe, dependable is one, he’ll never let you down.” - Beane added that he and Schoen have already discussed the Giants’ salary cap problem, while Schoen acknowledged digging into personnel within hours of being hired. Schoen has also been involved in one head coaching interview and will conduct his second on Saturday. - By all accounts, Schoen has hit the ground running and is already living up to Beane’s praise. - - List - - 15 head coach candidates Giants could consider - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
