The moment Dave Gettleman “retired” as general manager of the New York Giants, Joe Schoen became the favorite to replace him. - Although Schoen, who had been serving as assistant general manager of the Buffalo Bills, had other teams calling him (see: Chicago Bears), he always had eyes for the Giants. And when he first met with co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch, he told them as much. - - The Giants were never terribly concerned that Joe Schoen might take an offer from the Bears or anyone else because Schoen told them during the process that they were his No. 1 choice. - — Ian O'Connor (@Ian_OConnor) January 21, 2022 - - - There had been some lingering concern that the Giants were interviewing too large a pool of candidates and perhaps dragging their feet a bit. However, GM and head coaching interviews took place at a slower pace this year and ultimately, Mara and Tisch did not feel rushed. That was aided by Schoen’s early commitment. - As patient as the trio was over the past two weeks, they’ve sped things up over the past 24 hours. Schoen got to work immediately after being hired, which was true to his word. - “It is an honor to accept the position of general manager of the New York Giants,” said Schoen. “I want to thank John Mara and Steve Tisch and their families for this tremendous opportunity. And obviously I am grateful to Brandon and the Bills for the experience I have had in Buffalo. - “Now, the work begins. My immediate focus is to hire a head coach, with who I will work in lockstep with to create a collaborative environment for our football operations. We will cast a wide net, it can be former head coaches, first-time head coaches but, more importantly, it has to be a person who possesses the ability to lead an organization and the ability to motivate and develop players. On the personnel side, we will begin to evaluate our roster and prepare for the draft and free agency. Our goal is to build a roster that will be competitive, have depth, and most importantly, win football games.” - The Giants are now on the hunt for a new head coach. - - List - - 15 head coach candidates Giants could consider - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
