USAT: Giants Wire

Jan 23, 2022

Mock draft season has gotten off to a feverish start but when it comes to the New York Giants, things have been remarkably uniform. - From Mel Kiper Jr. to our friends over at Draft Wire, most projections have the Giants sticking to the same four or five names. And such was the case in the most recent mock draft released by Vinnie Iyer of The Sporting News. - In it, the Giants draft two players who are among the most frequently mocked to them. This time however, the picks came in reverse order. - At No. 5 overall, Iyer has the Giants taking Iowa State center Tyler Linderbaum. - The Giants would be smart to target the offensive line in the first round, perhaps multiple times. to boost both Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley. Linderbaum, an intelligent rock of an interior blocker and a perfect long-term line leader, would be a great fit, too, as a major upgrade from Billy Price. - Linderbaum, who is universally believed to be the best at his position and a likely Giants target, usually goes at No. 7 overall. But with his stock rising, Iyer made the right call and had him off the board with the first of the Giants’ two first-round picks. - At No. 7 overall, the Giants select NC State offensive lineman Ikem Ekwonu. - The Giants get another strong blocker with their two top-10 picks, Ekwonu is a strong, powerful run blocker with the nasty streak needed to dominate at times. He can play either inside or outside in the NFL, but with Linderbaum bolstering the middle, it would be nice to have Ekwonu flank left tackle Andrew Thomas on the right side. - If the Giants can’t land both Evan Neal and Linderbaum, the combination of Ekwonu and Linderbaum will suffice. It’s hard to imagine any Giants fans being upset with two Day 1 starters along the offensive line. - - List - - 2022 NFL draft: Giants select a new QB in full 7-round mock - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Giants Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Giants Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
