ESPN's Kevin Pelton and Kevin Arnovitz join David Locke talking NBA Free Agency / After a 4th of July hike in the Utah Mountains David Locke, host of Locked on NBA, coerced ESPN's great basketball minds Kevin Pelton and Kevin Arnovitz into a conversation about NBA Free Agency. On a gorgeous independence day sitting outside the guys re-hashed what took place in the opening days of free agency. - The biggest surprises, DeMarcus Cousins to the Warriors, Paul George staying in OKlahoma City, the Rockets losing Trevor Ariza and of course LeBron James to the Los Angeles Lakers. The conversation then moved to what has happened to the big men and the lack of market they received. Kevin Pelton has some rule changes to get rid of isolation, Kevin Arnovitz thinks the real impacters of free agency aren't getting mentioned. - - Learn more about your ad choices. 141 - Analyzing West's Playoff Race, Spurs/Thunder Plunge, Ranking Tank Jobs / Eight NBA teams are vying for the Western Conference's final six playoff seeds, and things are starting to get weird. Everyone is worthy, and no one is safe. - Can the Spurs survive the NBA's toughest remaining schedule without Kawhi Leonard? Could the Thunder really, actually, possibly miss the playoffs? Is the Blazers' recent streak for real? Should the Nuggets be concerned about their Paul Millsap-Nikola Jokic dynamic? Can Anthony Davis carry the Pelicans to home-court advantage? Do either of the Jazz or Clippers have the juice to escape lottery territory? Should the Timberwolves be considered done without Jimmy Butler? - NBA Math's founder Adam Fromal joined Andy and Dan to try making sense of the Western Conference's hectic playoff race, while also taking an in-depth look at the league's swathe of tank jobs. - As always, be sure to subscribe to and rate Hardwood Knocks on iTunes. The Cavaliers are dead last in defensive rating. Are they likely to make the NBA finals? Not as constructed. What needs to happen? 126 - NBA Western Conference Report: HOU/LAL/UTA Falling, LAC/MIN/OKC/PHX Rising / Welcome back, Hardwood Knocksers! - Most of the NBA's teams have officially crossed the halfway threshold of their schedule, which can mean only one thing: Andy and Dan need to hand out midseason report cards. - We start in the Western Conference, where things have gotten a little weird and chaotic and, thus, awesome since our quarterpole grades. The Houston Rockets look human. The Utah Jazz appear finished. The Minnesota Timberwolves are surging. The Oklahoma City Thunder are kind of following suit. The San Antonio Spurs remain the San Antonio Spurs. The Golden State Warriors are still the Golden State Warriors. - The Phoenix Suns are sort of frisky. The Denver Nuggets are disappointing, as expected and exceeding initial impressions all at the same time. The Dallas Mavericks are embodying blah, while the New Orleans Pelicans have prime real estate on Mediocre Boulevard. The Portland Trail Blazers might have turned a corner. The Sacramento Kings and Memphis Grizzlies have not. The Los Angeles Lakers are no longer overachieving. The Los Angeles Clippers are rekindling their playoff hopes. - Almost needless to say, then, we have a lot of ground to cover and less than eternity to cover it. Full Court Press NBA Podcast Episode 45 – Team Updates for Jazz, Thunder, Rockets, Bucks / We continue our in-season analysis. This week we wanted to see why the Jazz were playing so well, especially on offense. Well Utah did not get many wins this week but we came away impressed anyway. Why? Did you know they have the 4th best offensive rating in the NBA since November 15? Now you do. Listen to hear more about that. Are the Thunder as dysfunctional as the look? Yes? Is there hope? For sure. Might they need to make a coaching change? We discussed this. Are the Rockets doing sustainable things? Are they really a top 5 team on both ends of the court? We discuss this. The Bucks are 11-4 since the Bledsoe trade. Have they arrived? Most certainly not, they can get better and the rest of the league should be terrified of that possibility. Have we been too hard on Jason Kidd? We talk about why that might be the case. All of this and more.Follow us on Twitter: @willis_glen / @LawtonWillis / @presspodcastFollow us on FaceBook: @fullcourtpressnbaLearn more about your ad choices. 118 - NBA Quarter-Pole Report: Grading The Western Conference with Dan Clayton / Now that the 2017-18 NBA season has eked pasts its quarter-pole mark, rumor has it we're free to hand out report grades for every team. So, you know, let's do that! - Hardwood Knocks will begin with the Western Conference's jumble of craziness. And in order to properly ensure the hottest takes, Andy and Dan are calling upon Associated Editor of Salt City Hoops Dan Clayton (@danclayt0n) to join the party. - All 15 squads are covered—in random, speaker's choice order, we might add—so you needn't worry about us leaving anyone out. Among the most pressing questions, though: Have the Golden State Warriors tried hard enough so far to get an A? Are the Houston Rockets the NBA's most serious threat to the Warriors' reign? Are the Oklahoma City Thunder better than their sub-.500 record suggests? - How do we grade the league's most injury-ravaged squads, such as the Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies and Utah Jazz? Do the Minnesota Timberwolves deserve a passing grade? Are we prepared to give the Kawhi Leonard-less San Antonio Spurs an A? And what of the West's preeminent tank jobs from the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings? Are the Dallas Mavericks tanking hard enough? Are the New Orleans Pelicans surprisingly good or right where they need to be? - All this, plus much more, awaits you in Hardwood Knocks' latest. So grab your favorite beverage and flavor of Doritos, strap in and open your minds. Because the #takez, they are a coming! - As always, be sure to subscribe to and rate Hardwood Knocks on iTunes. 116 - Memphis Fires Fizdale, Marc Gasol Trades, Lakers/Cavs/Celtics/Jazz Mailbag / David Fizdale is out as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies. Assistant coach J.B. Bickerstaff is, for the meantime, in. - Figuring out what this means for the Grizzlies' future takes a couple leaps of faith. It doesn't seem to signify a teardown. Fizdale's removal comes following a 2-11 stretch and some feisty comments from Marc Gasol, one of the franchise's two primary cornerstones. Ousting the head coach reeks of an attempt to incite change for the sake of galvanizing the troops. - And what else could it be? The Grizzlies don't have the assets to launch an ideal rebuilding effort. Gasol and Mike Conley are their only meaningful trade assets, and neither of them is yielding a hot collection of picks and prospects at his respective price point. - Then again, the Grizzlies are 7-12, their playoff hopes fading fast. If they're still struggling to get their heads above water and/or stay healthy by January, it'll be time for a wholesale pivot—time to test the trade market on both Gasol and Conley and whoever else holds value outside Memphis. - Was firing Fizdale the right move? Will the Grizzlies re-insert themselves into the playoff conversation? Which teams could become suitors for Conley and Gasol if they don't? What does Memphis' long-term cap situation look like? - Answers to all these piping-hot questions precede an extensive mailbag that covers everything from Rodney Hood and Lonzo Ball, to hypothetical Cleveland Cavaliers trades and the Boston Celtics offense, to the Oklahoma City Thunder's malaise and Andre Drummond's reinvention. - As always, be sure to subscribe to and rate Hardwood Knocks on iTunes. Full Court Press NBA Podcast Episode 42 – Western Conference Updates Pelicans Spurs Jazz Thunder Blazers Rockets Kings Mavericks / We continue our in-season analysis. The Pelicans bigs are dominating the competitions. But the lack of wing players on the roster are holding them back. Can they find a way to get and stay better than .500? The Spurs have gone back to Patty Mills to start at point guard, how does that affect the rotation? How does that help Kyle Anderson and Rudy Gay? The Jazz believe in themselves while most of the rest of us are writing them off after the Gobert injury. Are the Thunder what their record says they are? Or is it the net rating? The Blazers are the second best defensive rating in the league? Is the defense for real? The Rockets are playing really well but are key rotation players playing too much? The Kings are depressing, but as always we hope it gets better. The Mavericks are lining up for a good amount of ping pong balls. But what is up with Noel’s playing time? 113 - Rudy Gobert Injury & NBA's Should-Be Sellers: Heat, Hornets, Clips, Knicks / This one's for the Luka Doncic fans. And the Michael Porter Jr. enthusiasts. And the DeAndre Ayton lovers. And the Marvin Bagley III apologists. - "Tanking" is an uncomfortable word for NBA teams—unless, of course, they're already tanking their brains out. (Sup, Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns and Chicago Bulls?) Ditto for the phrase "seller's mode." Squads don't want to admit they're throwing in the towel on this season, especially so early in the schedule. But someone needs to be a grown-up and have this difficult discussion, even now, with the 2017-18 campaign fewer than 20 games old. - Fortunately for you, Andy and Dan are up to the task. - Rudy Gobert is the inspiration for this "Sell, sell, sell" slant. He's slated to miss four to six weeks after suffering a bone bruise in his right knee (goddammit, Dion Waiters). And knowing how the Utah Jazz handle injuries, he may end up missing closer to eight weeks...or more. And if he's going to be sidelined for that long, should the Jazz even bother trying to compete this year? Or should they enter seller's mode and seek to shed salary or absorb lengthier deals for first-round compensation? - And which other teams need to be asking themselves something along these lines? We know the Suns, Bulls, Kings and, yes, Atlanta Hawks are already there. What about the Dallas Mavericks? How about the Miami Heat? Or the Los Angeles Clippers? What about—gasp—the—double gasp—Charlotte Hornets? Should the New York Knicks ditch fake competency for authentic tanking? - As always, be sure to subscribe to and rate Hardwood Knocks on iTunes. But you're knocking on the door of the next best thing: Hardwood Knocks' first-ever mailbag! - To start things off, we take you around the NBA with some quick-hitting news items: Robert Covington is about to be very rich, the New York Knicks may have passed on George Hill to sign Tim Hardaway Jr., and Chicago will play host to its first All-Star Game since 1988, when a certain GOAT was named MVP, in 2020. - From there, we get to your questions. That's right you, our loyal listeners, are now shaping the discussion. - Will the Cleveland Cavaliers even win 50 games? Should they be considering Kevin Love trades? Which projected playoff teams are in danger of falling outside the bubble? Is Andre Drummond really the best free-throw shooter in NBA history? Is this Memphis Grizzlies bench for real? - Who deserves to be the frontrunner for Most Improved Player more: Aaron Gordon or Kristaps Porzingis? Should the Utah Jazz be looking to make a trade? 93 - Life After Gordon Hayward: 2017-18 Utah Jazz Preview with Angie Treasure / Most NBA teams are thrust into a thorough rebuild after losing a top-20 player, but not the Utah Jazz. They have a superstar cornerstone in Rudy Gobert, which gives them license to chase playoff berths in the immediate aftermath of Gordon Hayward's free-agency exit. - How high the Jazz can climb up the Western Conference ladder, though, ultimately depends on everyone else. Gobert will anchor a top-three defense, but he cannot ferry the offense to respectability outside the pick-and-roll. That burden falls upon Ricky Rubio first and foremost. He is one of the craftiest playmakers in the NBA, but the absence of a reliable jumper, or even a strong touch around the rim, can render certain offenses predictable. - Hitting on another shot creator is paramount. The Jazz have Joe Johnson, but he's a million years old. Joe Ingles is one of the league's most underrated point forwards, but his on-ball value suffers when he can't leverage the shooting of Hayward or George Hill. - Rodney Hood is a smart bet to lead this team in scoring, but the Jazz have to see whether he can be an efficient offensive weapon. Rookies don't usually play monster roles on playoff hopefuls, but Donovan Mitchell may need to be an exception for Utah's offense to hum. - Beyond that, the Jazz need to shed clarity on Gobert's frontcourt partnership with Derrick Favors, Dante Exum's future, potential small-ball lineups, their bench rotation and a whole lot more. - To help understand what we can expect from this squad, we turn to Angie Treasure (@snark_tank) of The Zone Sports Network. - As always, be sure to subscribe to and rate Hardwood Knocks on iTunes. UTA Season Outlook with David Locke, NOP with Mason Ginsberg / Click to subscribe via RSS feed or iTunes. - - Jazz radioman David Locke joins for the Utah Jazz Season Outlook. We hit on how Gordon Hayward's departure will effect the Jazz, whether Derrick Favors and Rodney Hood can bounce back, and how rookie Donovan Mitchell fits into the mix. We also hit on potential breakout and regression candidates, playing time and lineup issues, key questions for success this year, and give our predictions for the Jazz season. Then Mason Ginsberg of Bourbon Street Shots joins to give the same treatment to the New Orleans Pelicans, including how a slimmed-down DeMarcus Cousins can improve, how much the loss of Solomon Hill hurts, where Rajon Rondo fits into their plans, and more. - - With host Nate Duncan (@NateDuncanNBA).
