He led the team to a 9-2 record in his first season and was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Coach of the Year.

Robinson's coaching career at Grambling State was not without controversy. In 2013, the team went on strike, refusing to play a game against Jackson State due to issues with the school's facilities and travel arrangements. The strike lasted for a week and garnered national attention. Robinson was criticized by some for his handling of the situation, but he ultimately led the team to a 7-5 record that season.

Robinson resigned as head coach of Grambling State in 2016, citing health concerns. He finished his coaching career with a record of 47-32 and was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.
