He was born on June 5, 1976, in Gibsonville, North Carolina, and attended Eastern Guilford High School, where he played football and basketball. Holt went on to play college football at North Carolina State University, where he was a standout wide receiver.
Holt was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the first round of the 1999 NFL Draft, and he quickly established himself as one of the league's top receivers.
