The Tennessee Titans enter the offseason at roughly $7 million over the cap and will need to free up more money in order to make moves in free agency and retain some of their own players. - Two ways they can do that is through making cuts and contract restructures, the former of which we have gone over here. - Over the Cap’s Nick Korte recently broke down the contract restructure potential of each team in the NFL, and there’s good news for the Titans. - Korte estimates Tennessee can restructure its way to opening up over $56 million in cap space with simple restructures, and over $90 million with maximum restructure. - Here’s how he defines both types of restructures: - “A simple restructure converts payments into prorated signing bonuses within the confines of the remainder of the contract. Teams typically have the ability to unilaterally execute simple restructures without any action necessary from the player. - “A maximum restructure increases the amount of cap space via conversion into prorated signing bonuses by either extending the contract or by adding void years to a contract, years that do not extend the contract but are only used as placeholders for the proration. Maximum restructures are typically considered a renegotiation of the contract that requires the player’s consent to execute.” - Of course, chances are the Titans won’t be moving that much money around when it’s all said and done, but it does show there is plenty of wiggle room for Tennessee to clear cap room to make moves. - - Here's a way to visualize how much effective cap space teams have currently, and how much they can end up with if they complete max restructures on their veteran contracts. This is a better way to evaluate how much money teams have for the offseason than just current cap space pic.twitter.com/lOtEX4sS8g - — Arjun Menon (@arjunmenon100) February 17, 2022 - - - The only problem is Tennessee could be kicking the can down the road again, something the team did plenty of last offseason. That said, a messy financial situation in the future will be worth it if Tennessee can win a Super Bowl. - - RelatedDolphins beat writer predicts Titans sign TE Mike GesickiTitans go EDGE, TE in Draft Wire's latest 3-round mockTitans' David Long reflects on 2021 season, how he can improve - - List - - 9 AFC South stories from last week for Titans fans to know - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Titans Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Titans Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
